In trunk lights 200 1989

This may be a stupid question, but there is a small light on the underside of the hood that I honestly just noticed. What size bulb does this thing take? Looks useless, but what the heck, I like to have everything work. Is there one in the trunk? Do I need to do anything weird to turn it on if there is? My wife's old jetta had to have the headlights on in order for the trunk light to come on.

The hood and trunk lights both use mercury switches. When you switch on the lights and close the trunk/hood, the light goes out. Sometimes at night I push my trunk lid down halfway, and the light flickers because the mercury is sloshing around in the switch.

The hood light is held in by one screw and the other side just slips onto the edge of the hole. The bulb is shaped like a cylinder with pointy metal contacts at either end that fit into metal pieces that hold it in the light housing. It will be obvious if you take it off.

I haven't taken out a trunk light before, but I'm sure it's easy, and it may even use the same size bulb.

The bulb size might be the same as the license lights. Can you check in your owner's manual? Don't try to take off the license lights, they are a PITA and are easily damaged.

The light under the hood can be removed and cleaned. The switch on it either turns it off or allows it to come on when the hood is raised.

There is a light in the trunk, mounted just about inside from the VOLVO badge. It, too, has a switch. Works with a roller like the dome light. Same as hood light - either off or on when the trunk lid is up.

On my 1988 244GL both these lights will come on without key or headlights.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      Thanks,

You know I looked through the manual and didn't see any bulb sizes, but that page could be stuck together with the McCrap from my glove box. (Memo to wife: glove box, not a trashcan.)

You can pop off the cover and there should be a bulb in there you can match up with a new one. I don't know the size off hand. It works like the interior light ... there is an on off swith on the cover and opening the trunk will turn on the light, closing it turns it off. If I remember correctly that year also has the same light on the engine hood. BTW, how the heck are you getting 320 miles to the tank? I get about 260 ... but that's city driving and I am a bit of a lead foot.

I don't start to look for a gas station until I'm at 320 or so... at 350 miles I start to get a little nervous, but I've never put more than 14 gallons in. Unless I really hammer it, typical mileage is 25-27 mpg. '92 245, M47, VX cam.

I used to fill up 11.5 gals at 244 miles, but now I'm driving 105 miles a day, all 2 lane country roads, no traffic lights or stop signs, cruise control on. Even with the AC on, I get gas every 4th morning. Of course, the car doesn't go anywhere else. When I started the commute I switched from Castrol to Mobile 1, flushed the trans, new plugs, wires, etc. . .general tune up stuff. And now I change my oil and filters every 5k miles. Don't know if that's what does it, but damn good mileage. Oh 87 octane.

Anyway, I've had the car for 7 years, and just now noticed the light. Seriously. I guess all the big things are fixed.
