Please help diagnose overheating problem 200

Hello all,

I’m wondering what causes my ’86 245 to overheat when driving in the city (stop-go traffic) only after I had driven it for about an hour at 75+mph.
Observations:
When doing 75+mph the temp gauge reading is normal.
During city-type driving the temp gauge also reads normal, even with the a/c running; it is only after I had driven the car at high speed that I notice the overheating problem.
Could the cooling system be the culprit? FWIW, the water pump and fan clutch were replaced within the last year. Could an improper exhaust valve-opening gap cause something like this?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Javier.

Are you having to add any coolant?

    Javier,

I agree with the previous posts, plus you might use a garden hose to spray between the fins of the radiator as it can accumulate a large amount of bugs, sand and gravel, dust, etc, over time. Cleaning it this way has helped my radiator to cool more efficiently. Spray from the engine side out towards the front (with the engine off, of course ;)

    Good luck!

    Regards,

    TomD

If your water pump was replaced, then hopefully a proper coolant flush was done. If not, I would definately start with that. If they system was not flushed and previously contained large amounts of residue, which was disturbed and shaken around by adding the new coolant, this could easily cause poor radiator cooling capacity and even intermittant clogging.

Remove the thermostat, flush thouroughly with a good cleaning agent, and install a new thermostat and new coolant. At minimum that should be done to ensure your cooling system is functioning efficiently, all assuming your radiator is still OK.

    Greg

      Thanks Greg.
Yes, indeed the old coolant was flushed.
I must add that I've been noticing these symptoms for the past 3-4 months.
      Javier.

        replace the thermostat.

are you sure it is overheating or is the guage "telling" you it is overheating? meaning it may be the temp sensor or the temp compensating board. I would suspect comp board would not be suspect cuz it is not affected by speed. but, the cooling effect of air at high speeds could keep the coolant temp sensor cooler and then when you slow down, the wind factor is reduced and the temp sensor is warmer than it was on the freeway?? I would also check the connector on the temp sensor.
