automatic transmission, Overdrive 200 1987

I have a 87 240 DL,automatic transmission. I have just changed the overdrive relay, shift wiring harness, and the OD solenoid. The car still remains in OD, it will not go into the final gear. I have had trouble in the past with the relays and i usually got by with just swapping them out. I was driving and the car kicked into overdrive and its been that way since. The harness from the shift button to the solenoid was totally bare. Please any suggestions. The car
has 182k on it and looks and runs great.

Thanks
Glen

I had to follow up, because I found out how to bypass the relay (after changing my OD Solenoid, but not gaining overdrive) to test before replacing or soldering.

Make a jumper (1/4 inch spade lugs) and jump the #87 and #15 contacts in the OD realy socket. If you gain Overdrive, then you've got a bad relay.

This is SO Cool! I thought I needed to buy a transmission, but now all I need is solder or a replacement relay.

Let me see if I understand you correctly? You start off in 1st, and as you accelerate the trans shifts into 2rd, then 3rd, and then O/D. Then it stays in O/D.

Does the amber arrow on the instrument panel work? Off means the trans will go into OD when conditions warrant, and ON means the trans is inhibited and will not go into OD at all.

If this isn't a description of what's been happening, please post with what is.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

I get to the gear right before the normal crusing gear, is that third?. The light on the dash is off. I can press the OD switch anf the light will go on,the
relay energizes, I can see and hear the click.

    Hello,
How is the fluid? Dropping the pan to get at the solinoid, did you notice how the bottom of the pan looked? Anything other than the usual grey sludge would indicate a more severe problem. Wiring should not be bare, shorts could result.
Can you manual shift to 2nd? Is the OD still engaged when you do this? If the fluid is burnt or does not smell "new" then you have FOD floating around, again check the pan any chunks? The place I am going is valve body problems, any and I mean any FOD in the valve body will cause a number of problems. Including OD dropout, or no dis-engagement. Also, the converter could be the source of FOD as well.

It was not necessary to drop the pan. What is FOD?

I have the same problem on a '90 Model 240 I bought yesterday. My busy mechanic said the relay was likely working properly if the (arrow) light comes on on the dash. Is this true?

He gave me (bless him) relay that was laying around. I swapped it, without checking the lead to see if it gets voltage when the button is pressed on the shifter (or released, whatever...). It, too, made no difference; I'm still driving in the lower gear (no overdrive).

I'll get a helper and crawl back under to check voltage, but (given that we don't have to remove the pan to replace the solenoid) do you suggest removing the pan, or are there other (maybe less messy) steps to take in troubleshooting this issue?

        Thanks.
