decrease in gas mileage from 25MPG to 20MPG 200 1989

Our mileage on our 245 has dropped from 25mpg to 20 mpg. Runs fine, replaced plugs, distributor cap, rotor, air filter and it still gets 20 mpg. It seems to not "coast" as it use to when I let off the brakes and I notice a decrease in acceleration. Any thoughts?

Thank you

Hello ... Sounds like there is something fishy in your braking system? If you notice a slowing down instead of coasting and less acceleration, be suspicious. On my Turbo I often am amazed at the ability for these Swedish cars to coast. Have you done anything to the brakes or emergency brake? After coasting to a stop get out and lightly feel all the rotors for temperature. Use the emergency brake to make the final stop. A sticking caliper will be warmer than the rest. Good Luck and GREAT noticing that your car is trying to tell you something. Gary at Ggaryboy@aol.com

The answer's obvious! Get a locking gas cap - someone's siphoning your gas!

Sorry - just my $0.02.

Sounds like it's running too rich. I have had similar problems on my 88 and 86 244's, both B230F.

In the '88 I found a hole in the bottom side of the air hose, replaced hose. I replaced all the things you did, plus O2 sensor and coolant temp sensor. Still have the problem, but it's a little better. Also check the thermostats, both the one in the air box and the one in the cooling system.

Good Luck, I hope this helps.

How does it idle? As smoothe as before, or a little rougher?

- Clean the throttle body if you haven't done it recently. Remove the body, give it a thorough cleaning, and replace the gasket. The TB has a couple of tiny air holes inside the "throat". Make sure these are not clogged.

- Next, clean the idle air control valve. This can also cause rough idle and poor mileage. When coasting, the throttle body closes shut and the IAC valve takes over. Make sure it is functioning OK!!!

The 700/900 FAQ contains good information on how to do both jobs! Hope this helps. Let us know!!!

Make sure the engine is up to temp, if not you'll get worse mileage. How's the O2 sensor, it's easy enough to replace, that may help.
