    SRS Code 5 - anybody knows what it indicates ? 1991 740 700

Okay...after replacing the airbag module, removing the seat to get to the crash sensor and replacing that piece I found out that the problem was in the clockspring behind the steering wheel. I was lucky that the boneyard took everything back and charged me only $20 for the spring at the end...
    Thanks everybody for tips.

Offhand I think it's "bad airbag module" or "improper resistance in airbag module".

Did you reset it yet? The "5" code is often bogus, set off by a jump start, momentary battery power drop, or other such things. It could be real, however.

Put it this way: If it comes back on repeatedly, check the wiring harness connector that leads to the steering column. That connection often has issues in the 200 series cars... I'm not sure about the 7 series. If it still comes on, it is probably time for professional diagnosis.

      Chris:
Thank you for your answer. I tried to reset it (clear the memory), but it never got cleared. The light stayed on after the reset. I checked the harness and it seems to be in perfect condition. When you say "airbag module", do you mean the "module" under the driver's seat ?
      Thanks.

        Like Gene said.

If you have to replace the airbag module (the airbag), you should be able to get a used one, and hopefully a used winder/clock spring for a decent price. New price is several hundred, but I've seen used 700 series airbags for about $100, a few times less than that.

The impact sensor and backup power unit are the parts under the seat. The "airbag" module is the part staring you in the face while you're driving.
