Checking the ATF level and other related paranoid questions 200

Does my car use only Type G transmission fluid? Why does Volvo make checking the ATF level such a chore? When I wiped the ATF dipstick, it seems that the plastic measuring part (the piece with the MIN and MAX on it) always cathes lint or something, regardless of what cloth you use. I can see tiny, tiny threadlike fibers after wiping the dipstick with cloth--even napkins (the smooth type). Does anyone know what I'm talking about? These are not thick clearly visible fibers, but I'm wonder if they will harm the ATF and the tranny.

I know exactly what you mean! Use a lint-free cloth to avoid this annoyance. For me, an old under-shirt makes the perfect car rag. Having been "pre-washed", the tiny lint fibers are gone.

If you cannot find a good cloth, use your tongue in a pinch. That never leaves lint . . . suddenly, I don't feel too good . . . by the way, ATF isn't harmful, is it?

Well you could always use the dipstick to clean your nose. No worrying about swallowing any of that mess. :)

I know you're joking about using your tongue but my friend had this happen. He was selling a car and one of the women interested in buying it insisted on bringing her boyfriend to check it out because he was a "mechanic". When he got to the car, he started out by pulling both the engine and tranny dipstick and licking them. I guess his tongue was fine tuned to sense impending repairs based on the flavor of the fluid.

Not sure what year your car is?

Use lint free cloth, but not sure what you are saying. Is there fibers in the fluid?
