I Screwed up - oil pan seal need replaced? 900 1993

I'm doing a whole load of stuff to my '93 940 Turbo, one of which is replacing the front engine (crankcase) seal. Well, in the course of scraping the old one off, I accidentally cut off the bit of oil pan seal that sticks out right below the front seal. Am I going to have to replace the entire oil seal - or can I get away with cutting the bit I need from a new one? If I DO need to replace the whole seal, how tough is it? I looked under the car and it looks as though there's about 2" (being generous) of space to work with. uggghhh.

Please advise,
Thanks much

I have had good luck using the Permatex "liquid gasket" in place of gaskets. In fact, better luck, the liquid gasket seems to seal very well without weeping!

If you have the piece you chopped out, you can probably glue it back in. Otherwise, you can "splice in" a piece from a new gasket.

Scrub and clean the pan surface free of all oil and gunk, and use a good, sticky, gooey gasket cement. If I were doing this, I'd use Permatex aircraft gasket cement.

Once it becomes tacky, stick in the new gasket piece. Once it grips and holds the chunk o' gasket, fill the gap (if any) using RTV where you cut the gasket. You can also use RTV to seal the top of the gasket where it mates to the seal housing.

I'm sure you'll be OK. As I recall, two bolts engage the seal housing up from the pan, and go through the gasket in the process. So the piece won't budge.

Dropping the pan is a nightmare that's just not worth the effort.

Thanks a lot for the help. I'll definitely splice in a new piece.

By the way Don, your "rope trick" for the timing belt kicks some serious butt!!

      Thanks many times,
      Steve

"Cutting the bit you need"? I don't know how this will stay in there. Try RTV to fill the gap. This seal is not under pressure and merely keeps oil in the sump.
