Tail lights 200

Hi.

I need a new passenger side tail light pod. I was wondering if one from an 82 240 sedan would fit my '86 240 sedan. Thanks alot.

The 82 may have the older five-panel lights. No swap there. If it has a six-panel light, it will fit the 86 hole but it won't work right.

Beginnning in 1986 the hi-level brake light was a requirement and Volvo, in its infinite wisom, diddled around with the lower level brake/tail light system.

The lower outer tail light became a two-filament tail/brake light. The upper inners became rear fog lights, controlled by a dash switch just below the headlight switch. The lower inners remained tail lights.

It's that two-filament lamp bulb holder fitting that's the non-swap. There is a way to make it work but it's hard to describe. Naturally the swap requires the 1986 circuit board, which will fit once you successfully get it off the old unit and carve off a locating pin or two.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

It can be made to work. I have an '84 taillight on the right rear of my '87 244 (along with a '92 on the left side), so I have asymmetrical brake lights, but the bulb-out warning light does not come on because of it. I'm not sure if my '84 taillight has the older circuit card or not, but I think he'd only need the newer card if he want's the older taillight to act like the newer one. IF it's a hassle to make the dual-filament holder fit the old taillight, then just don't bother since it's the passengers side taillight that he's replacing. It won't affect the rear fog light since it's on the drivers side.

No, the 82s had smaller tail light assemblys. I think an '82 264 is the same though. The 240s changed in '83 and i think were the same up until the end. B.G.
