Dexcool: The Source of Troubles

Folks, I can't disclose the source, but it's a pretty good one. The problems with Dexcool originate with the Texaco Havoline formulation, which has demonstrated deposit formation and other anomalies in GM cars. Other "Dexcools" appear not to: you can buy a Prestone or Zerex product that meets the same specs but does not cause these troubles due to different formulations.

Zerex has some new coolants in development that look very promising; I'll post news as they announce it.

Dexcool: The Source of Troubles is Texaco

    aaaahah!

That might explain why I haven't encountered too much nastiness with Prestone Extended life in the 240, 850, SR5....

Although I think even the Prestone Dexcool and Volvo rad tank caps aren't real compatible. One overfillage, and one minor pressure relief and you got chunks in the little relief valve...

    Dexcool: The Source of Troubles

I have used Texaco Dexcool 50/50 with distilled water in the '86 760T for several years without trouble until recently. Now I keep topping up a pint and a time. I can see small leaks at coolant hoses to and from turbo and lower radiator hose at the engine. These are brand new hoses in the car a few months with new clamps kept tight, but I see small residues of dried coolant on the metal surfaces. There are probably other leaks because these seem too small for the amount of topping up I am doing. Unless I can find Zerez Glysantin soon, I will probably go back to Volvo coolant.

The Zerex product will be out soon: more later.

Is there a recommended way to flush and clean the system after using Dexcool?

You don't have to clean anything, just flush with water.
