We also have an 89 wagon in our family, as well as, other Volvos. I often compare them when having problems.
Here is what I have learnt about the 89 240's. This board is the only place that I have ever read about the 89 cpu problem. I have spoken to a Robert Bosch Corp.(the cpu mfr.) mechanic/tech, Volvo dealers, Volvo salvage yard dealers, other 89 owners, IPD, FCP, and many others about this so called problem with the 89. Here is what I was told. 1. Any car, Volvo or non-Volvo can have a cpu problem, and it almost invariably manifests itself immediately, just like a desktop pc - remember they have no moving parts. 2. No one I spoke to knows of any particular problem with the 89 Volvo than any other car. 3. In the end, meaning the final end, when the problem is known and the repair successful, it is usually discovered that it was not the cpu at all. I had this recent conversation with Ken @ IPD and he said those computers are extremely reliable and almost never have any problem, that's why we don't sell them.
Personally, I think the 89, 240 works about as good or better than some of our other family Volvos. BUT they [all Volvos] seem to have their own personality or idiosyncrasies or Achilles heels. I suggest trying to get yourself some original reviews of the particular car your are complaining about. I was surprised to read about some of the things that are just the way these cars are and there is nothing you can do do about it. For example, 740's are notorious for the front rotors warping. so you need to exercise extra attention to stay on top of that problem. 240's have comfortable seating, are a little slower on stopping, could have better handling, are somewhat noisy, can idle rough when cold (remember the O2 Sensor is not working until the temp gets up there much longer in the winter, so, the engine is in a default mode).
In other words, although I might test the cpu inputs, the cpu is one of the last things I would expect. The 89 has a great EZK-116 ign system. Much improved over the previous cars. I think the 89 is a classic. There are not too many of them in the yards. THAT says something. We have far more problems with our 1990, 240 sedan, with similar mileage (but then again, it was not maintained by the former owners, which explains that).
