PAECO performance parts - anyone tried 'em? 200 83

I get a catalog, PAECO performance parts for import cars. I don't even remember how or why I get it, but they seem to have some serious setups for the Volvo B21/23/230 and B18/20/30 motors - performance camshafts, valves, heads, ignitions, entire engines, machining services... But I don't recall them being mentioned here on the board. Has anybody tried any of their stuff?

Re: PAECO performance parts - anyone tried 'em? 200 76

I bought a PAECO 266 degree reground cam, along with a set of high rpm springs and retainers, for my '83 Toyota Celica (22RE motor), but I didn't end up using the cam because I found a good deal on a Competition Cams Blue Racer 266/276 degree cam later; the Blue Racer has considerably more lift (c. .040"), because it's made on a new billet, not a regrind. The valve spring set has done what it's supposed to all the way to 6200 rpm (occasionally) for 25,000 miles and the cam and all the rest looked well machined, except for one retainer.

Does anyone want to buy a 22RE cam, new regrind, in box . . . ???

I get the impression that the folks at PAECO are a bunch of good-old-boy Alabama folks with lots of machine shop skills and race engine experience, but not a lot of business organization.

      Re: cams 200 76

Blue Racers are made by Crane not Comp.

Blue Racer division is closing up as Crane reorganizes their brand name(s). It is being partially replaced by the "Blazer" name in their line up.

I doubt the fact that it is a regrind was the deciding factor in the lift. Cam manufacturers, lead by Comp Cams (if you were following above), has promoted the growth of higher and higher lift as the answer to everything. It helps make power if everything else is right, but duration and lobe separation are so often wrong for the application that shopping by lift isn't always the answer. Some of the more helpful cam co's give lift at .200, which is more essential to how the cam will flow that peak lift. Usually duration at .200 is between 110 and 170 deg.

This comment is not directed at your instance- I have no idea of the details of your build up- more just a general observation.

the lobes that paeco use to grind their cams are not the latest fast opening, high lift profiles. You may lose a couple horses for that reason alone. Also their lobe separation on the B18/B20 OHV engines is 110- too wide for optimum power.

Also many parts in the catalog are no longer available. They listed weind air cleaners for several years after weind stopped making them. I very much doubt that they had that much stock. I seems like they wanted to bulk-up their catalog.

"Does anyone want to buy a 22RE cam, new regrind, in box . . . ???"

Would that work in my 1985 SR5 PU with 22REC engine? Too much high end?

Re: PAECO performance parts - anyone tried 'em? 200 76

Since I never did install the PAECO cam, I can't give a first hand report on its torque curve; the Blue Racer which I did use has very good low end response from a set of very similar basic timing specs (in my car it's pulling through an AW-71 automatic), but as the other person pointed out, basic cam timing specs are only a small part of the story of cam grinding, since lift rate, lobe separation, and even the amount of degrees that the cam grinder wastes on "quieting ramps" (which is another reason why a lot of solid lifter cams are also advertised with a set of specs for how many degress between a certain small amount of actual valve lift) can also make a big difference. What one needs is one of those graphs of area under the lift curve, but I doubt that PAECO can provide such an item.

My Haynes manual doesn't indicate any change in Celica 22RE motors up through '85 which would effect the installability of the cam, but there is one area of concern of which I assume you are aware: unless your rockers are of very low mileage and in perfect condition, you would probably want to put new rockers on a new cam, but the rocker stands on a 22R series motor are held on by the head bolts, which means, if you want to set a perfect example of conscientious mechanics' standards, you need to change the head gasket, too, rather than just torque the rocker shafts back down again.

But if you do want the cam, I'll send it for $85., including shipping.

Re: PAECO performance parts - anyone tried 'em? 200 83

I called them up once about Volvo camshafts. I was not impressed by their knowledge of specifications. I was ready to buy, but they had nothing to say to convince me that they knew what they were talking about. I ended up buying a new A grind from Volvo in Canada for my old 83 242T instead, since that grind was used on a Volvo Turbo (B230ET). That was years ago. I hope they have improved. I do like their catalog and it is impressive. I am just not sure that one company can be an expert in every kind of motor. I would probably spend the money on Unitek parts from Sweden. There is a link from the Turbobricks website links section. For the same or less money, I think you could get a better motor and better parts, even with shipping from Sweden.

        Peter,

Sarcastic or just being an ass? I sometimes blur the lines and piss people off, seems you do too.

In this "information age", I figured that if the company had a website, Jason would have posted the address indtead of the name of their catalog. Anyway, thanks for keeping me on my toes:-)

If you were to ask my girlfreind, parents, employer etc...they'd tell you that I am a smartass.....but I am of the belief that I am "witty". And yes, occasionally people get pissed, that their loss for being slow I figure.

I've drooled over their catalogs for years. Down south somewhere? Five stages of modification madness?

My guess is they build to order.
