Necessity of wheel locating pin. 700 88

I have two alloy rims off a 240 for my winter tires. I went to put them on and found that one of them did not have a hole for the locating pin. What is its actual purpose? I don't think it maters whether it's there or not.

No need for them. I think it takes a 9mm wrench to remove.

There is no need to retain them. They were installed because some rocket surgeon decided it would be a good idea to spin balance wheels on the car. The fact that noone in the universe has the equipment to do that anymore seems to have escaped them. The part about having to rebalance after every tire rotation was a great idea too.

You can get your front wheels spin balanced on the car at a shop that works with large vehicles, semi tractors, dump trucks, etc. Cost is $25 for me at a local shop. Front end is silky smooth at all speeds, something I could not say beforehand.

THAT'S what it's for! I wonder if they help to line up the rotors too. Anyways, I've gotten rid if it without a worry. Thanks

I think it holds the rotor on too, but so do the lug nuts, so it's probably not a big deal to remove it. I'll have to do the same when I put my turbo alloys on my '87 240.

Whereas the older cars have two small hex-head bolts holding on the rotor, the newer ones replace one of those bolts with a pin. No big deal...
