front shocks 200 1989

Just put new bilsteins on the rear of my wagon. Getting fronts from santa (wife). Is this something I can do myself? The rears were easy, especially the second one.

Re: front shocks 200 1989

Easy to do, but you need a spring compressor—and a 1/2" drive air impact wrench is a big plus.

Also, having done front shocks before (or at least observed) is helpful with the little things, such as the damned brake lines.

As you said, "...especially the second one."

Re: front shocks 200 1989

Can I rent a spring compressor? The guy who teaches the auto mechanics classes where I teach is willing to help so I have access to the air wrench.

Thanks

Chuck,

If you have AutoZone stores in your area they loan or "rent for free" various tools including spring compressors.

Re: front shocks 200 1989

"Can I rent a spring compressor?"

Probably.

But you can buy el-cheapos for under $20 from the likes of JC Whitney, Harbor Freight, maybe Northern Hydraulics, and Joe's Schlock Discount Goodies 'n Leftovers. These are almost "use-'n-toss" tools made in China (though I never throw anything away).

"...so I have access to the air wrench..."

That's good. And a selection of deep sockets, I hope.

Though it might be better to NOT have this stuff, so you can ask Santa for a nice 6-hp 60-gallon compressor, regulator, hoses, air tools, accessories, and so on. Think of the possibilities!
