"240" is the general term, regardless of whether the car has 2, 4, or 5 doors. A 244 has 4 doors (the middle digit tells how many cylinders in the engine, and the last digit tells how many doors)

    2 doors=coupe

    4 doors=sedan

    5 doors=wagon

Re: what is the difference between 244 and 240 200 1986

Around the mid-80s Volvo decided to drop the last digit denoting the number of doors from the model number, or at least from the badge. A 0 was substituted, so 242, 244 and 245 all became 240, etc. In internal documents and if I remember correctly the VIN you'll still find the old numbering scheme. So there really is no difference except for the badge itself.

      Bram

Re: what is the difference between 244 and 240 200 1986

        Well, sorta...

from '80-'85, the 240-series cars were only badged with trim levels:

        DL

        GL

        GLE ('81 & '82 only)

        Bertone (262C)

        GT ('80)

        GLT

        Turbo

...but internally, they were still known as 242, 244, & 245.

By '86, the Turbo and 242 (all trims) were dead.

The introduction of the 760 in 1983 was the first public badging of a Volvo to eliminate the 'last digit = doors' trend.

In '86, Volvo had 2 types of car 200 and 700. To keep them differentiated, Volvo numbered both types.

But internally, the standard nomenclature was kept through the 850 series, i.e. 945 was a 900 series 4-cyl wagon, and an 854 was an 850 series, 5 cylinder sedan.

I'm living in Malaysia ( in South East Asia)

In my country, the difference are :-

          244 for those 200 model untill 1982.

From 82 onward, all are labelled as 240.

That's interesting. In the USA, the 200 series non-turbo cars used the AW70 transmission, but not until '81.

was your car assembled in Malaysia?

Actually mine original was bw55 just changed it last two months.

A lot of difference in acceleration / economy.

The car was assembled in malaysia. All the 244 (original) here are

              B21A.
