tailight conversion 140-160 75

Don't ever let your little brother borrow a car you care about! That's what i learned recently. So after i kicked some ass i looked into repairing the mess which involved replacing the 4 panel tail light assembly on my 75 164. I have searched around and nobody seems to have the 4 panel. Everyone, however has the 6 panel. Is there a possibility i can convert to the 6 panel taillights?

75 164's came with a wider tail light with more red in it, if that makes sense. they are shared by only 75 164's and 76-77 264's. What that corresponds to in 4 vs 6 light I dunno, but the 164 lights are bigger. You try rpr?

The link below will take you to a local Volvo repair shop here in town.

I have no doubt that he will have what you need. I don't know how reasonable he will be....

I want to thank brickboard. I was having quite a difficult time tracking down that 4 panel tail light assembly. I posted a wanted ad as a last resort (it should have been the first thing i did). Needless to say the part has been tracked down. Thanks Brickboard and all you Brickheads out there!! Keep on Rolling!

Conversion: not without cutting out the required sheetmetal from a donor vehicle and some good welding and spraying.

However, the 4 panel lights are identical, as far as I'm aware, to the ones used on the '73 onward 14*. I think you should be able to get them without too much trouble, there must've been hundreds of thousands of these assemblies made. They're quite ubiquitous around here, if you're really in a bind you can get them from here (the Netherlands) by airmail in a matter of days. If you're prepared to pay a little more it would probably be possible to find new ones (as in "new in box, never been used").

I thought cutting sheet metal might be the case. There are no plans to do any such cutting, so my search for the darn thing is still on. if anyone stumbles across a left side tail light throw a word my way.

Try internet carparts. Matt has a banner on this site. He'll probably have it and he's reasonable.

One step ahead of you there. I tried Matt and he took alot of his time to find the part, but could only find the 6 panel lenses.

    Re: tailight conversion 140-160 75

Isnīt the four panel light the same as all the 73-74 140/160 series sedans taillights? And wasnīt the 240 1975-78 sedans all four panel lights in the US?

If so, it canīt be impossible...converting to the six panel light is possible, however - just cut the required holes out, but may be a shame on one of few "untouched" old style 75īs. You do what you feel like.

    /Martin
