Removal of wagon Back Door 200 86

I would like to remove my wagon back door, do to a school bus not stopping in time, and replace with another. I do not have a manual and would like to request any instruction or advice on how to remove the door.

Thank you.

Pay attention to the washer stacks and which are in front. There is a difference (at least on a '93).

Make sure you have some duct seal or some other suitable kind of sealant available for the hinges seating surface when you put it back together.

Mark the outline of the hinges in grease pencil or masking tape. Makes it easier to realign when putting back on.

You can loosen the bolts before you open the tailgate. Makes it a little easier. Then prop it open and remove hydraulic lifts. Tailgate weighs about 75 pounds.

If your harnesses are iffy, good time to fix. Also, inspect the grounding strap inside of the hinges. Fix or make an alternate repair. If these grounding straps break, weird electrical things will happen with the tailgate.

    Good Luck,

    Tom

      Sealant Necessary? 200 86

If one installs new rubber seals under the hinges, is any additional sealant really needed?

I assume so. It was in there when I took the hinges off my '93. The sealant is something like duct seal, or plumbers putty. I think the idea is to have something that will remain pliable and provide an extra seal around the bolts in case any water gets past the rubber. Water can do amazing things, specially when it's wind driven.

Get a stepladder and open the tail gate. Use the ladder to take the weight of the gate. Pull the rear corners of the headliner back and down to free them. You will then see the bolts (and a couple of screws as I recall) holding the hinges to the car roof. Have a helper steady the gate as you take the last bolts out.

Just a little addition: Don't forget to unplug the wiring harness through the hinges first (plugs are behind the headliner too), to avoid breaking the wires when you remove the tailgate.
