The floor pan stamping is the same for the sedan and wagons of that year range. The wagons had the live axle and the sedans had the multi-link.

The live axle can be substituted for the Multi-link but the amount of component differences is HUGE! You will need axle, fuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines, Driveshaft, exhaust, and I 'm sure a few more things I can't think of right now. I would bet you could get custom springs and shocks made cheaper.

I'm sure the mountings are not there to tie in the upper arms and other misc supports to keep the solid axle from rolling off it's coils but if you are just playing, and you have a welder and some torches........

This from a guy who put a V8 in a Vega and tubbed it out. I had it 10 years and my father still doesn't wonders why I did it.

    You do what you like.

"This from a guy who put a V8 in a Vega and tubbed it out."

I once saw a tubbed out Chevy Chevette with a HUGE V8 at a car show. Even more of a sleeper than a V8 Volvo.

The "I" in IRS means INDEPENDENT rear suspension, which by definition, means MORE THAN one piece. So, if a car had a one piece (live) axle, then it wouldn't BE multi-link.

The real question is; why would you want to remove a sophisticated independent suspension and replace it with a heavy solid beam design that's been used since the Model T?

To add insult to the injury, you'd have to scrap your 80 litre gas tank and replace it with the 60 litre tank.

I'm just curious why you'd want to do that. It seems like it would take a lot of work, but what would be gained? (I don't know, so that's why I'm asking)
