Re: rear bushing replacement 200 1990

You will need to use penetrating oil on the rear trailing arm bushing.

The only easy way that I know of is to have the proper tools. This is

the type of job that if you have the expensive proper tools that is the

short cut. Have a press of at least 10 ton around. Volvo actually never

made a receiver tool for the torque arm. I had a machine shop make me one

because I couldn't find something that would work.

Re: rear bushing replacement 200 1990

As tony said, patience. The pilot way works fine but you are going to needa press. The bench vise idea....hahahahahaha, never happened.

get something to cut through all the undercoating that is on and around the bushings. some of the bushings are 'webbed' (i think it was the upper arms) so pay attention and replace with the webbing facing the same way.

The bushings that are probably your culpret are easy to get out if you cut them but tough to get in. these are the ones on the axle itself. the tabs on the axle wants to bed and pinch the ingoing bearing. I temporarily welded a bar across the two thin bushing mounts to hole them parallel. that help a bunch. I put lithium grease on the through bolts as I put everything bak together.

Re: rear bushing replacement 200 1990

War Story:

This has got to be the hardest job I've ever tackled on my Brick. My '84 had umteen years of holding in the old bushings. Patience & perserverence is mandatory for the task.

Re: rear bushing replacement 200 1990

I removed the large bushings using a recipricating saw. After removing the bolt, I sawed down on the inside of each flange leaving about a quarter inch of bushing remianing. The I used a punch and a hammer to remove the remaining portions. Cooled the new ones in the freezer and greased them well and used a threaded rod to pull them into place. The entire job took a leasurly saturday morning. I didn't find the job as difficult as many have made it out to be.
