Location of Fuel Pump Relay? 700 1989

Can anyone tell me where I may find the Fuel Pump Relay on a 1989 740 Turbo Wagon? I took apart the lower dash under the steering column and located what may be the relay which has a 10amp fuse attached - but am unsure. Thanks.

Why solder the Fuel Pump Relay? 700 1989

Why solder the FPR? BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE BAD DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH YOUR FUEL PUMP(S)! The FAQ has simple tests on checking the main and in-tank pumps. This is something I failed to do and you shouldn't.

Here's the full story: I resoldered my FPR several months back and the car was running fine until two days ago. It just quit in heavy stop-and-go traffic. The car just died softly, like it was doing when the FPR first went bad. I thought maybe I hadn't done a very good job with the resoldering and would just buy a new one. I had the car towed to a reliable mechanic who told me that the FRP was fine -- power was being delivered to the main fuel pump, but it was frozen up and wouldn't turn. On further trouble shooting, he also confirmed that the in-tank pump was bad (I have the Bosch fuel system on my '89 740 turbo).

The main fuel pump failed because it was working extra hard trying to make up for the failed in-tank pump. My mechanic speculates that the FPR fried due to the extra current draw required by the main pump. At no time did I ever get an indication that the in-tank pump was bad like I expected to see ... hesitation and possibly dieing when the fuel dropped below 1/2 tank. The car appeared to operate normally at all times. On the positive side, I confirmed that I can solder and I now have two good fuel pumps in my car.

"Why solder the FPR? BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE BAD DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH YOUR FUEL PUMP(S)!"

True. But then again, it might not be. The solder and soldering process used for hi-volume automated production leads to a weak connection, and the solder crystallizes and cracks from age and vibration. Hand soldering uses MUCH better solder, and is a MUCH better process.

My wife's '91 740 quit in traffic a year ago. Yep — FPR connections were cracked. Resoldering brought it back to life, and it has been fine for a year and 15k miles. I'm confidant that my resoldering solved it, and that the pump had nothing to do with the FPR failure.

I figure it's better to spend $0 and 20 minutes on the attempt. After all, you coulda put a new $50 relay in your car, only to have a bad pump destroy it. And you still woulda been stuck in traffic. Furthermore, maybe your car had two impending (and independent) problems: A weak relay, and a tired pump.

Good point. It's best to measure total current to both pumps. It it is wrong, isolate from there. Expensive repair job, Eh?

Re: Why solder the Fuel Pump Relay? 700 1989

I was able to find both pumps at a local salvage yard for $150 total. The car they came from had about 90K miles, but had been totalled in a rear end collision. The attendant at the yard let me take the FPR as a spare. It wasn't as painful as it could have been ... Merry Christmas to me!

Noticed that Randy has told you how to locate the fuel pump relay. You might also go into the 700/900 series FAQ at this site. There you will find lots of good information on fuel pump and relay diagnostic proceedures.

    Good luck!

Remove the ashtray and then remove the piece that the ashtray rests in. Take off the plastic surrounding the lighter and remove the two screws that are behind the surround. Remove the piece that is now loose. Your fuel pump relay is on the left hand side of the second row of relays, the overdrive relay is on the right hand side of the same row.
