Yokos AVS-H4 wear 900 92

I know this belongs in the Aftermarket forum, but its been heavily infiltrated by the dark side of FWD gnomes.

At any rate, I have been a vocal advocate of Yokohama HIgh performance AVS-4 tires. These are very good rain/sumer tires and rated as a decent snow tire in light cover. Unfortunately the've lasted only about 30K which seems to be severly short. Any others had similar experiences? I run them at full inflation (44psi) as I have with all my tire. NOt as dillegent on rotation, but that should show up as differential wear. Have ordered a set of Bridgestone Potenza 950s... At least they have a 45,000 treadwear warranty over four years.

Change your handle Shatz. May I be the first to suggest "Mr. Magoo"? (or is that Dr. Magoo?)

You just bumble on into the sunset with that 960 of yours, quietly ribbing those who encounter repeated failures. You just pee in the gas tank every week and keep on going. I have a brother like you. I hate you guys.

Ok, the subject at hand...... ** 44 PSI **?!?!??!!?!?!!!?!?!?!

Sweet Jesus.

Ummm. Shatz? Are we certain that isn't the maximum BEAD SEALING PRESSURE??

Is there any enamel left on your teeth?

For the record, I put those same tires on the wifemobile 6 months ago. A couple weeks ago, while avoiding a collision with another car, she drove into a curb. Sidewall split and cracked wheel. Tire Rack hooked me up with a single mounted unit and I installed it. Strange.... it was INDISTINGUISHABLE from the other 3 after 6 mos use. They all still had the molding extrusions on the tread. Not even a TRACE of wear.

Oh. We run 32psi...... religiously.

Re: Yokos AVS-H4 wear 900 92

Mr. (Dr.) Magoo? You wound me Etherman. I hope I'm alittle more savvy than that! I know my diatribes can be somewhat sharp and perhaps even a bit overstated, but malign my own 960 compadres when that dark side emerges from their euphoria? Never. I've only been unrelenting when some bricksters grossly overstate the facts, draw conclusions from a small sample or second-hand experience that steer others away from our beloved 960s.

Can I help it if all I have to complain about is my tires not giving me 60K??? I could tell you that I only get a year from my keyless remote entry, forcing me to purchase, at great expense, not 1, not 2, but four batteries at almost $3 a pop. But I know better than that, because like the golf gods that let no bad deed go unpunished, soon the darkness will stir deep inside the bowels of this black she-devil and I wil be left stranded on the side of the road. I treat her with respect and keep my distance...

Oh, yes..44psi is the manufacture's max pressure as stated on the sidewall. I've always followed those recommendations, regardless of the tire, but just as soon as I get unhooked from my dialysis, I'll consider reducing them some....on my Potenzas.

p.s. Would peeing in the gas tank help reduce that unsavory engine ping upon start-up?

...depends on the size of your 900's prostate.

44 psi? Shatz, I am amazed you still have your kidneys: that's got to be a punishing ride. I take mine up to around 35psi max, usually around 32-34. Where does the wear occur: middle of the tread? If so, maybe you are overinflating.

Re: Yokos AVS-H4 wear 900 92

I dunno, I just inflate them according to the manufacturers max inflation of 44 psi. that is stated on the sidewall. These are V-rated tires, if that makes a difference. As I said, I have always done this with very good results. I have two tires that actually have greater wear on the center, so you may be right about the overinflation, although 44 psi shouldn't be overinflated. My gauge may be inaccurate, so I'll try to check that. I had attributed it to misalignment or balance.

Re: Yokos AVS-H4 wear 900 92

hey, that 44 has nothing to do with your Volvo. Follow the recommended pressure noted in the manual. Not the tire, follow the manual.

If they were in warrenty talk to the dealer.

I've been told (had the same kind of experience with Continental tires), good performance tire = quick wear. Poor performance - last forever. You decide the trade offs.

"hey, that 44 has nothing to do with your Volvo. Follow the recommended pressure noted in the manual. Not the tire, follow the manual."

Tire size, driving style, and suspension setup are also factors in the "correct" tire pressure. 34-36psi might be good for some tires, but would be too low for most lower profile tires. I usually inflate to 38psi cold (44max on the tire).

Re: Yokos AVS-H4 wear 900 92

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try 38psi on the new ones if they are stated as 44 max. And you're right, I had forgotten to say that I zero-plused the tires, going from 195x65x15 to 205x60x15.

Re: Yokos AVS-H4 wear 900 92

I haven't come to this conclusion on my own. It is a practice that I've found to be highly successful based on discussions and recommendations of tire experts. You are right about the performance aspect, but I never thought about the AVS as being a high performance tire. It certainly isn't expensive ..guess I wrong!

That said, I will ratchet down the psi on this new set and see how it goes. Thank for everyone's persepectives and advice.

Re: Yokos AVS-What? wear 900 92

PMFJI, but I didn't see an AVS-H4 on Yoko's website ... you must have AVS-db, 320 wear-rated (or AVS-Intermediate or AVS-Sport? ... both fast-wear).

Discount Tire told me they always fill the tire to MAX pressure (cold) ... they said the tire runs exactly flat (no pun) at this pressure. Yes, I'm a bit incredulous, and would like to find a tire engineer to confirm this.

You're right. The AVS was the precursor to the Avids. No longer available.
