Exchange Rate: 86 to 84 200 84

Any major differences 'tween the 86 and 84 wagons? Don't know much about 240's, but I have a corker 86 240 wagon (never really had to work on it) as a donor and a line on a "good deal" 84 wagon (no rust). Hoping to make a happy Frankenstein from the two. Any thoughts?

Re: Exchange Rate: 86 to 84 200 84

Craig -

The 1984 was the second and last year for the B23 engine, the B230 began in 1985, so your 1986 has the B230. The B23 is a stronger engine, forged crankshaft rather than cast. The displacement went from 2310 to 2315 cc via some small change in stroke, but the B230 is still a non-interference engine. As mentioned, the LH fuel injection system is different.

Look at the gray connector on the firewall, I recall that the 1984 has 5 wires from it, the 1986 has four, I don't know which one is missing. That's one difference.

Also, the B230 is equipped with the Diesel-Kiki rotary a/c compressor, the separate p/s pump/reservoir system, and a two-piece vibration dampener.

That being said, if the 84 body is tight, you oughta get a good Frankenstein. Oh, the wagons have some idiosyncracies that sedans don't.

One is the wiring into the cargo door. It goes via two harnesses, one in each cargo door hinge. They eventually crater, short out, or just quit.

Sometimes it's b/c the hinge pin gets stuck to the inner piece and the roll pin that holds it from twisting shears off. Then the pin can move to the side - where is impacts the harness and cuts into it. You can see if the hinge pin is moved out of place. If yes, find a good pair in a junk yard and get them into top shape, then swap. The harnesses can be re-built, too.

Check for rust in the lower corners of the cargo area windows, and around any roof penetrations on the roof rack.

Go for it!

Good Luck,

Bob

The 1984 has LH 2.0 Jetronic, and the 1986 has LH 2.2 Jetronic. It should bolt in, however the coolant temperature sensor might be different, but is probably the same.
