will try for an easier, (hopefully) request. have a '77 242, the engine # printed on the engine block is 498849. can anyone tell me what year car this engine came from (it doesn't seem to be from a '77) or steer me to a source that could tell me. thanks again.

Is there any other numbers on it somewhere? I have a 77 244, and it has a B21F engine.

i found another # on the head by the thermostat 463312. on a blue tag on the driver side wheel weld it says emission control type 4fa 130 cu.in. i think it is a b21 engine just not sure what year it is. i thought that the b21's of that era all had a wax thermostat on them, and this one does not. i'm thinking someone put in a different engine in it from a wrecker. thanks joe h.c. for responding.

This is a tough one. I looked thru my sources, and I can't match the numbers anywhere. Have you tried calling your local Volvo dealership?
