k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

this is for all you CIS people out there who know what youre doing. ive been reading up on the workings of the k- jet system lately,, and am hearing it is next to impossible to work on. without the proper flow meters, etc. im thinking my warm up regulator is either clogged or just bad,, if i get a new one is it going to need calibration? the engine is currently undergoing a full rebuild soo compression, etc will all be prefect. any suggestions? or if anyone knows someone in PA who is good with it let me know. thanks - john

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

FYI:

CI - Continuous Injection such as K-Jetronic.

CIS - Constant Idle System such as on the later CI equipped Volvos.

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

John -- I echo the suggestion to get a fuel pressure gauge test kit. J.C. Whitney sells an inexpensive kit. Bentley has a procedure for testing system pressure and rest pressure. It's in the turbo section (which uses the K-jet system) and it's a good procedure. I had a problem similar to what other folks have been describing -- start right up (cold start injector doing its job) and beginning the stumbling/stalling about 15 seconds later. Turned out the problem was a bad relay and harness plug for the frequency valve function. The relay lives just downwind of the battery and after 20 years of exposure to battery acid vapors its no wonder the relay was all corroded up and the plug was rotten. If it turns out you do need a new CPR, rather than buy a new one, you might want to contact IPS in Boise, Idaho. Here's the URL --> http://www.importpartsspec.com/

They subcontract with a company in California which rebuilds CPRs. I got mine rebuilt for about 1/4 the price of a new one. Works great.

Good luck.

Rob (also in the Phila. area -- must be a lot of K-jets around us -- we should form our own VCOA chapter of K-jets!)

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

In my experience with K jet, when you are having problems with the warmup

regulator you will have symptom you can't miss. If it was clogged like

on my car, then it will stall when you start it up cold because it doesn't

lower the control pressure. Usually it will stall a few times then it would

run after that. I have worked on Kjet a lot. If you need any help or info

please email me. I'm in NJ near Phila area.

What are your symptoms?

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

Are you getting the rough idle, like some many k jets do? My 78 has been like that for the last 60,000 miles(what a fuel system!). Ive recently been thinking about trying to smooth it out. It dies alot when cold(it starts right up though, regardless). It smooths out after it warms a bit.

Could be the regulator? Could be partially clogged injectors? Could be...? I dont know.

Could you let me know what you find out? I sure would appreciate.

Luck

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

hey thanks for the feedback i will let you know as soon as i pinpoint the problem directly,, basically what had been happening is the car would start right up but then run real rough for about a minute until the engine started to warm up a bit,, the other things that ive been looking at are the thermo timing switch, cold start injector and aux air valve. the engine is in pieces at the moment undergoing a complete rebuild, so getting to any of the parts isnt really a problem. i guess when i said confusing in reference to the cis i should have said tricky, especially calibrating the warm up regulators to a worn engine, or if the pressure plate isnt making proper vaccum. theres this really informative website i found,, although the editor seems to be kind of a prick just from how things are worded but hey he's australian,, i guess they do things differently down there. anyway if any of you are interested it has a lot of good info, heres the web address

http://www.users.bigpond.com/INTERJECT

if you follow the links there is a pretty good K-JET section.

anyway i will keep you posted and if anyone has any more info for me just let me know thanks - john

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

Jon,

Yea, I checked out the Australian awhile ago. He has some interesting things to say about It.

My k-jet, from the day I bought it(several years ago), will always die a few seconds after a cold start. But then run great all day.

My son drives it now. It still does the same thing, and perhaps its gotten a little worse. Hes so intent on keeping the car, I just decided that maybe its time to do something. I think Ill start by cleaning the injectors.

I put in a crank , mainbearings, oil pump, and a used tranny when I bought it. Its still going strong at about 250,000(broken odometer).

Please let me know if you discover anything earth shaking.

Thanks.

Re: k-jet question/ warm up regulator 200 79

Most of the tools are basic, if you read a manual, most tests are nothing fancy. The most important item is the fuel presure gauge and valve. You can test the regulator with this.

A meter to measure dwell is useful for the frequency valve and the idle "motor" (aka CIS...by Volvo- Constant Idle System...confusing?).

THe system is very reliable, and the warm up regulators very seldom fail.

Check everythiong else carefully before condeming it, they are expensive and a pain to remove.
