Oil In Distributor Cap 700 1989

I am still working on resolution of engine running very well most times and then suddenly losing power or cutting out all together on occassion. Plugs replaced recently. Fuel Solenoid replaced about 35K ago and plugs about 12K (platinum type with insulator covering all but end of electrode). Inspection of distributor cap indicated an oiliness in cap and on rotor. Car has 160K. Engine is 230F. Could fuel filter cause this intermittent problem??

You probably need a new distributer shaft seal. There is lots in the 700/900 FAQ. If you need more information, post to me and I will answer your specific question.

This is what I think I had replaced. the benefit is a much stronger spark, so more power and a cleaner burn

If the distributer is the same set up as a B280F, then the oiliness is probably due to a faulty seal. The seal fits on the base of the distributer and is cheap, but the labour can take a while.
