Tailgate Latching Problem 700 87

I am still having a problem with the tailgate latching on my 87 765T. In fact despite the great deal of lubrication (Blaster, WD40, Graphite, Litium grease and even Mobil 1 motor oil) it will not fully latch at all. It just latches (secondary) so the tailgate moves an inch or so. It will still lock (only good news). The only thing I can think might help is to move the lower latch point out a little, but it looks as if it can not move any further outward. To do this I would need the special star type socket that Volvo uses to bolt down this hook. Could it be the latch mechanism is broken in some way? It was working closing correctly on and off for the last few days. Yesterday I could get it to fully latch by slamming it couple time. Even this technic will not work anymore.

Any ideas? and where do you get those special star allen wrenchs for Volvos?

thanks, John

Re: Tailgate Latching Problem 700 87

    John:

I have the same problem, and although I haven't fixed it yet, my guess as to the problem is this: the little black plastic bumper on the catch is worn down (mine has a groove where the latch hits it) preventing the latch from engaging its fully-closed position. A trip to the junkyard this weekend may answer the question...Those star wrenches, called Torx (TM) are available in most any auto parts store. Other BBers may know offhand, but the size might be a #35.

      Steve,

I am interested in how you manage with the salvage yard part. Do you know if the black plactic part is something that can be purchased seperately from Volvo. I might try to give a dealer a call to find out.

      thanks, John
