Electrical Gremlin w/int. lights?? 700 1987

This is a very odd thing. When I first got my car (780) the interior lights didn't work. It kept blowing fuses. I took the overhead light apart and found a bit of corrosion making a bad situation. I cleaned it and the light works.

However (and you know that was coming), when I open the drivers door only the footwell light will come on. the overhead will work normaly if you switch it on, but not on the door setting. The passenger door works just fine, all the lights come on normaly.

Ummm... Could a wire be disconnected? I don't see how the footwell light comes on fine but not the overhead??? This has perplexed me for a while, but I didn't want to waste any of the vast knowledge that is given so helpfully by those on this board.

    Hi,

I have a 940GLE and when I bought the car last year I had problem with the dome light and the reading light. But now it has been fixed and working fine. I am not sure if your car wiring is similar to mine or not. But for my car, the door switch has two ground wires for each door switch. One for the door light and the other wire is for the dome light. So I suspect that this could be door switch related problem. No grounding possibly.

A few month ago my left front door gave similar problem like yours. When the door is opened, the door light works fine but not the dome light unless I wriggle the switch then the dome light would come on. After a minor 'Surgical treatment' the switch works fine. So have a look at the door switch. Furthermore in my car, after shutting the driver's door the dome light would remain ON for a few seconds before they go OFF. This I think is to assist the driver at night to find the ignition switch.

    Hoep this helps you.

    JRamboIV:

Remove and test the driver's door mounted light switch. This switch and associated wiring, depending exactly on how your 780 is wired, could be the problem.

    Good Luck.

In my 84 240 I do not have the floor lighting, but I had a problem with the dome light. The switch in the door jam that turns the light on and off was covered with a little rubber dust boot. I took that off and the light has worked fine ever since. This probably wont do you much good unless there are separate switches in the driver's door jam for the dome light and the floor lighting, but its my 2 cents.
