AW71 to M46/M47 700 1989

I'm considering swapping my Aw71 auto tranny on my 1989 740 GLE (16 Valve) for a manual. I've heard M90 is the all around best tranny. Is it better than a M46 or M47. Which is better between the M46/47. I've done lots of engine work on my Volvo but never something of this caliber. Is there lots of wiring and complicated mods or is it just unbolting old parts and bolting on the new. Will installing the pedals and shifter be difficult? I'm confused about the severity of this swap- some have told me it's easy while others say it's very in-depth and I should have a whole other car to swap from. Thanks for any info....I'm just trying to figure out what I'm getting in to!!!!

    Re: AW71 to M46/M47 700 1989

The swap is really not all that hard. If you're capable of changing the clutch on a manual car, then you can do this swap with a few hours more work. (I have a link to me adventure below)

As for the M46/M47 debate, a lot of people will tell you that an M47 is weaker than an M46. This just isn't true. (Well, maybe if you compare an M47 to an older steel-case M46, but not if you compare it to an aluminum case M46...) I have a friend who rebuilt an M47, and it basically *IS* an M46, with the manual 5th gear bolted to the back the same way the M46 overdrive was... (obviously there's a little more to the gear-selector linkage...)

      Help w/auto - manual pedal assembley changeealturoit 200 1992

I've done the tranny swap from auto/manual and vise versa for the other donor car. Our problem is this. Looking at the pedal assemblies from both cars looks like a nightmare. Any help on how to make this easier would be appreciated. Do we take the complete dash out or the steering columns to get the pedals out? My firewall has to have a hole drilled for the clutch cable. Thanks.

    Re: AW71 to M46/M47 700 1989

It's not very complicated work. Grab all the parts (drive shaft, box/bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, crossmember, pedal box, gaiter, center console pieces, relay/switch in case of M46, wiring harness to box, clutch cable (or hydraulics)) from the donor (preferably a similar vehicle so the pedal box, driveshaft etc will fit straight in), unbolt the old stuff, bolt in new stuff. For a novice I'ld budget two full days (getting that pedal box in is a bitch due to underdash cable harnesses and air ducts), I could probably do it in about 8 hours especially if I had an assistant to help me move the heavy bits around.

Be sure to get the correct manual flywheel for your engine/ignition system in case it has the induction ring on the current flexplate. BE CAREFUL about the flywheels with induction holes. I learned that different model cars with this type flywheel have either 40 holes or 58 depending on the MODEL car. The 240 M47 only came with oned type 58 for the ez116 ignition. I just did this with my car a 92 B230F. I bought a flywheel from volvo used parts -Brian Upland and a clutch kit - all M47 parts for the B230F. I then had the flywheel resurfaced/lightened/balanced with pressure plate. The flywheel started off with 29lbs and ended up with 20lbs. The donor car was an 86 with new clutch that I couldn't use and the M46. We switched complete driveshafts so that it was a matched pair.

      Good luck.
