Overdrive shut off 200 1986

Hi

when traveling at 60 mph recently my overdrive (automatic transmission) shut off and the indicator light on the dash came on. as would be expected, the engine was racing pretty high. i slowed down and clicked the OD back on using the switch on the gear shift and didn't have any further problem. could this be symptomatic of something? i've noticed it happen once or twice at low speeds as well. other than that, it runs extremely well and is serviced regularly.

any advice appreciated. thanks.

In my experience, this has been symptomatic of my right knee hitting the overdrive button on the shifter.

Relay, pushbutton, wiring to the pushbutton.

I'd bet my first cold beer on the relay. Resolder it. No cost, no risk, 15 minutes, clean 'n easy work. If that's not the solution, you're out nothing.

Got pictures if you want 'em.

        Chris --

The first picture below shows an OD relay before resoldering. The cracked connections are barely visible in the picture, but were more visible to the eye. You can see them under a bright light (sunlight) using a magnifying glass.

The second picture shows the same relay after resoldering -- it worked very well after this repair. In addition, a small section of burned foil was repaired, which is the pink wire at the top.

The third picture shows the burned trace. This is caused by a short circuit -- the wire going to the solenoid chafes through and the conductor randomly touches ground. Usually this will blow the fuse, but sometimes the relay burns instead.

You know where to find your relay?

And you're good with a soldering iron? (Tutorial, click here.)
