Are Zimmerman rotors OK? 200 1984

I need new front rotors on my 84 DL soon and am considering Zimmerman rotors that are listed on ebay at a reasonable price.

Does anyone know anything about Zimmerman rotors? Are they any good?

I am considering the solid vented and the cross drilled rotors. Is it worth $30 per set to get the cross drilled?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

"I am considering the solid vented and the cross drilled rotors."

Does your car have solid front rotors or vented front rotors? I'm not sure when the DL models got the vented front rotors, but it's easy to tell just by looking at them. If there are small spaces between either side of the braking surfaces on the rotor, then it's vented (as in air can pass through). Otherwise it's just a solid piece like the rear rotors, and it's narrower than the vented rotors. Whichever you have, you must use the same for replacement unless you want to change your calipers.

The best prices on rotors I know of is from www.alloemvolvoparts.com. I would suggest the ATE Power Disc rotors. They have grooves in them which perform about the same as the holes in drilled rotors, but the chance of cracking is much less than with drilled rotors. They're available in either solid ($27.51ea) or vented ($44.35ea). alloemvolvoparts.com also offers free shipping for orders over $50.

I have a pair of Zimmermans for the front of an old Porsche 912. I have them mounted, but I have not driven with them yet (still rebuilding the calipers). The Zimmermans look exactly like the Ate orginals. In fact, Zimmerman may be a rotor OEM for Ate. I think you'll be okay.

I don't know how good they are but if you don't want to buy them through ebay. gapa.com has front ones for like 120 bucks and rear for 100. I was thinking of buying them for my glt...but I don't know if they are any good either.

"gapa.com has front ones for like 120 bucks"

Better yet, you could get a pair of ATE Power Disc rotors (grooved & vented) from alloemvolvoparts.com for $88.70, plus they offer free shipping for orders over $50. A pair of rear rotors would be under $60 from the same site.

Re: Are Zimmerman rotors OK? 200 1984

I put Zimmermanns on the front of my 1991 940T in February. They were $50 ea from the Volvo dealer. 7000 miles later, no problems. I also put new front rotors on my wife's 1995 945T, but dealer stopped carrying Zimmermann, and I got Volvo instead for $75 ea. I couldn't tell the difference, except that the Zimmermanns felt a tad bit heavier. I would say go with Zimmermann if the $$ is right, but be sure if you have solid rotors now, you get solid again, unless you want new calipers, etc. I would see very little advantage to cross-drilling, unless you race, or drive a lot in the mountains.
