Instrument cluster removal? 200 1992

My car is a 92 244 with an instrument cluster consisting of a clock on left, speedo center, water/gas on left. I'm replacing the clock with a tachometer. I removed the screws on the right side of cluster and it wants to move forward. The left side of the panel is adjoined by a triangular portion with the rheostat, rear fog, and headlight swithches. The triangular portion wants to move with the inst. cluster but I didn't want to force the whole assembley. I removed the top of the steering column with no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Instrument cluster removal? 200 1992

I usually use the key to my car to pop out the plastic bezels like the one behind the headlight switch and the ones to the right of the cluster. Also make sure you get the metal plate out behind the headlight switch bezel because it will be in the way of removing the cluster. Once the cluster is loose, you should be able to slid it straight out, but sort of upward, and then move it to the right and pull the left side out a little further. When I swapped the clock for a tach, I was able to get enough room behind the clock without disconnecting anything from the cluster. I'd recommend a short screw driver (4-5") to make it easier to get the screws out. FWIW, complete tach install instructions are in the archives.

Pull the dimmer and headlight knobs straight off and pop the little facia off. Then you will see the two left side screws holding the cluster in. Also remove the little steel plate after the screws are off.

I highly recomend taking the top of the steering shaft cover as as well.

Email me for complete tach install directions plus other stuff to check inside there.
