All I can smell is Gas !!! 200 86

Since my last gas fill up about 5 days ago, all I can smell is gas when I'm crusin' down the road.(Drivers'window open)Seems to be almost non-existent when I cruise home at night with the windows closed)

Its happened in the past but usually dissipates a couple of days after a fill-up. I don't see any leakage and my gas mileage is normal (25mpg on this tank)

(25% around town and 75% Highway @ 75-80mph) I don't think leakage is a problem and I hope it goes away or I'll have to get it checked out)

What do you think about the situation...Does anyone experience this from time to time?

Thanks in advance,

Jack W.

Is that possible that you overfilled the tank? There is a big (~3/4" diameter) hose connecting top of your fuel tank to a drainage hole in the trunk (passnager side, exactly opposite to where the spare tire is) that is used to drain the gas in case of the overfill. If either this hose is disconnected, or the hole itself is plugged up, the gasoline that did not fit into the tank stays in the trunk.

I would agree with Tom. Sounds like you either have a leak up toward the top of the tank OR the gasket for the sending unit is not happy. When I did my in-tank fuel pump, I was able undo that big crown nut by using a very large screw driver and put it between the crowns and tap it with a hammer.

The only thing I noticed was that it helps a lot if you go from one crown to another, if you don't it tends to wedge itself and it wont turn.

Putting it back is the same deal. I put vasaline on that crown nut and it helped.

Experienced the same problem, and began after pulling and replacing in tank fuel pump on '87 240 wagon. Pull inspection cover in floor over tank and look for gas wetness around pump access port in top of tank. Leaks when full and does not drip, just lays on top of tank. Need to re-do O ring on tank pump plate. Part is cheap, but special wrench needed, and might be better to have done at dealership.
