More advice on a '83 245T 200 1983

Hello again!

More questions! BTW Thank you very much for all the help I have gotten so far.

As you help me to troubleshoot, the cat converter in the car is plugged. I've been doing some research. The easiest way would be to replace it with a direct fit, since a have not been able to find a shop to custom build a 2.5" system in SF CA. Now, fcpgroton.com sales a aftermarket cat for $ 270 made in sweden and summitracing.com a direct replacement hi-flow made by catco for about $ 250. What would be a better option? How long can expect this parts to last?

Second, a found a '84 240 T at a junkyard (not selfservice) looks as if the car had some performance enhancements since it has an intercooler. I would like to get it if it is a good deal. Were 240T fit with intercoolers from the factory for this year model?

Third, the same car has the exhaust manifold an turbo ready to be taken since somebody already took the engine head. How can I tell if it is a 90+ exhaust? Is it worth to get the turbo (The shop is only asking $40)? The compressor outlet has been exposed to dust and weather.

Last, can a turbo (water cooled) and an intercooler from an '89 740 T be fitted in this '83 240 T?

Thank you very much for any replies

Re: More advice on a '83 245T 200 1983

I would go with the Summit deal. This seems like a new thing, though 'cause they didn't used to sell a direct bolt on for the B21Ft. I think 5 years or more should not be out of the question...maybe 10?

No 83 245's came factory intercooled but mid-late 84's had intercoolers. I'll bet that car is factory intercooled. Get that intercooler and all the parts. What performance enhancements does it have?

90+ exhaust will look radically different than your current exhaust manifold. More curveasous and free flowing. Earlier even on 700's will look the same. Is there freeplay in the shaft?

Yes if Garrett it should fit. Intercooler will fit.

Re: More advice on a '83 245T 200 1983

PAUL-

I beg to differ but ~480 turbos came from the factories in 1983 with IC's. These are of course, the famous pseudo-Group A, 242 Ti SE "flathoods" of race homologation fame. While only about 480 were made, currently there are 26,789 members of various Bricks list/boards claiming to have "flathoods", but they are confusing Aunt Nellies hand-me-down '77 242DL with the homologation cars. They have "flat hoods" not "flathoods".

Funny - maybe I should have been a lawyer. I almost wrote, "except the famous flathoods"....but instead I wrote: NO intercooled "245's" came from the factory in 1983....:) True statement, no?

I have thought about converting the 85 245Ti to a flat hood. Would my car be rare?

Re: More advice on a '83 245T 200 1983

I stand corrected! 245 does qualify your statement as true. Not the first time I have misread a post. I think the flat hood conversion can be nice. I like the look and together with Euroglass lights, it does clean up the lines. Note that the recent auction of Euro glass headlights on Ebay (item 523602261) featured a distinctly different lens and mounting from the big Cibie ones I got from Canada. How many types of big glass lens are there then? There are a number of different flat hood grills. And I mean grills made for cars with quad 4X6 headlamps or big rectangular glass lenses and flat hoods.

It would be a flathood poser. It would indeed be rare, since only you would own one. It would be as rare as you!

Re: More advice on a '83 245T 200 1983

You would want a direct fit cat with the support mount to the engine block to avoid carrying the weight of the cat at the turbo/cat joint.

The one you are replacing could be the original, so they last, if you keep turbo oil out of them.

Late 84's were fitted with IC's so that does not necessarily mean any enhancement was done on this car.

I doubt it is a new type manifold. I might take (have taken) a turbo if it were silver, not rust, had little or no play in the output shaft, or had a Garrett rebuild tag (green or red). I would not take a rusty, sloppy possibly original turbo.

I doubt the Mitsu turbo can be easily fitted but it probably can be fitted. Not sure.
