insturment cluster removal (164) 140-160 1970

Hi. I'm the one with the GT gauge cluster for the 164.

I had a hard time pulling the cluster out of the donor car (I wound up

removing the whole dash to pull it out). Are there any tricks to

replacing these gauge clusters without such major trauma? I'm not sure

I know enough cuss words to pull it out otherwise.

I've found that I can't remove mine unless i remove the speedo first because it's too deep.

Put you hand around the back of it and try to find the nuts (they're designed to be done by hand) and undo them. Remove the speedo cable and then remove the speedo, then the remainder can be done like the normal cluster.

On my RHD I turn the speedo face down turn it 90deg clockwise (looking above and then pull it straight out, but this my be different for LHD.

Its been a while, but as I recall, you undo the two plastic thumbscrews that hold it tight, then push the whole unit back and turn it on its face under the dash. Then disconnect everything and pull it out its own hole above the steering wheel (still face down).

As I said though....its been a long time so my advice may well be totally useless...

The description by Matt is very close. The only things I would add are that in order to get reasonably easy access to the long plastic thumb screws which are on the back side of the cluster at the left and right extrmities, you need to remove the lower dash plastic panel. Also, I suggest unscrewing the speedometer cable before trying to pivot the cluster. You can also pull out all the cable connectors from the back side of the cluster before pivoting it for removal. Each one is a different shape so its unlikely you will get them mixed up when you go to reinstall. I think you will want to compare the pin arrangement on the replacing GT cluster with the one being removed to make sure everything gets organized correctly. The clusters may very well have different printed circuit cards on the back and therefore different plug arrangements. If that turns out to be the case, then you will need a wiring diagram to figure out which wire number gets hooked to which gauge, the lighting etc. While you are at it, change all the bulbs. The cost is small compared with the work of going back in to replace a blown bulb. Good luck

The pin connectors look the same to me....but in different locations. Shouldn't be a problem there.

I was able to get the stock ribbon type speedo guage set out of my parts 142 this morning....took about 5 minutes...no cut wires.

The problem will be fitting the GT cluster...its too deep and wont fit through the hole. (Hence your problems getting it out of the scrapyard) You'll have to either thread it up through the back, or remove the speedo (and maybe the tach) first, and re-install them after the rest of the cluster is in place. It shouldn't be too hard to do this though, but do give yourself plenty of time for the project in case something does go wrong.
