REPAIR TAB....LEGIT? 700 1991

I just received the happy news from the local Volvo dealer that my oil leaks are numerous and problematic. The following are the required repairs, along with respective prices therefor, that I was quoted. If there are experts among you who would be willing to provide me with a "price" critique, I would be most appreciative. Needless to say, I am mainly checking to see if we are talking "ball park" as opposed to a flat-out gouge. Thanks for your time.

1. Front engine seals; Flame trap cleanout;

replace timing belt......................$407

2. Distributor "O" Ring; valve gasket.......$135

3. Re-seal water pump.......................$107

or

Water pump ............................$198

P.S. - I was also pitched on new radiator hose ($98) and various other

services (e.g., brake pads a millimeter away from disaster) all

of which I summarily declined. Have made no decision yet as I

would love some expert input.

Are those Canadian dollars? If not, find a small independent shop that knows Volvos.

    Re: REPAIR TAB....typical 700 1991

depending on what the dealership charges for each hour of labor, the estimate you list is not that far fetched......$60 per hour adds up REAL fast.......and in some areas, $60/hr is considered a bargain.....find out the hourly rate and how much time is charged for each repair; then you can figure out how much the labor is for each repair......remember this: the technician working on your car will probably be paid less than a third of the hourly rate you're being charged.......the rest goes to paying for the lights, the building, the secretaries, the carhops, the owner's vacations to the tropics, etc........been there, been screwed--worked in dealers for 15 yrs as a tech--seen it all......that's why I work for me

Warren's advice is good as to whether you need the repairs. All of these will have to be done sooner or later and none fall in the "you need new muffler bearings" category.

None of these repairs have to be done at the dealer; all can be done for far fewer labor hours at a good independent shop. Dealer service writers are paid in large part on the dollar volume they generate. My wife and I have both learned this the hard way. Routine repairs not requiring specialized diagnostic tools are almost always less expensive at an independent shop.

So look for someone who knows Volvos and use them for the repairs.

Take your car to a local car wash and spray wash the engine with the hand held wand. Get under and over and beside it. Then look for oil leaks. The distributor o-ring does leak. The oil seperator box does leak if a hose is off or the o-ring is bad. The front seals do leak as well and I replace mine evert 100K miles, every 2nd belt. Take the front plastic cover off and look at the timing belt. Is it wet with oil or nice and dry?

Check other places for estimates as well. Check the 700/900 FAQ for more info.

Do you have three fan belts or one serpintine belt?

    Re: REPAIR TAB....LEGIT? 700 1991

    Your being overcharged about 250 - 300 for 1 - 3

Fair cost on the 1 and 2 would be in the 200 - 225 range

    and about 75 for 3.

    If done at same time.

To do the timing belt every thing has already been removed to get to the seals and the water pump. My dealer charged me an extra $35 including the parts to do the front seals when they did my timing belt $175.

A decent independent shop should be able to do 1 - 3 for under $200

    including parts.
