Stuck in Overdrive 200 1990

As I was driving yesterday, I noticed that my overdrive light had lit up. At first I thought that this may be simply a problem with the switch (and not actually with the overdrive), but I then noticed that the engine was revving at a higher rate, like I was stuck in a lower gear (3rd?) going 55 mph. I tried to de-activate the overdrive by pressing the button on the shifter, but to no avail.

I had the transmission overhauled only two years ago. Does anyone know what this could be? Is this dangerous for me to be driving at higher speeds (55-65mph)?

Thanks a lot,

Matt

    Hi Matt

didn't you check the fuse first? i just read all the replies and no one suggested that. this same thing happened to me about two weeks ago. i checked the fuse and it was blown. i re inserted a new fuse and it didn't last long before it blew. then all subsequent fuses blew right away and i knew that i had a wire loose somewhere about the transmission. i think something wasn't grounded right, anyway, i took it in and had the wires from the transmission checked, and voila.....good as before and it only cost the price of a few fuses.

    anyway, good luck.

    Matt --

Resolder the OD relay. $0, 15 minutes, zero risk.

      Don:

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I'm a novice when it comes to self-repairs (but I'm trying to learn!). Where exactly do I find the OD relay and what do I solder it to? Also, is the present condition dangerous for me to drive in? Thanks!

      -Matt

        Matt,

If you can't repair the relay you can simply bypass it by removing it and jumping plug pins 15 to 87. This will keep overdrive engaged all the time. I haven't seen any difference in the last 100K of driving with my 86 AW70 trans wired this way.

Re: Stuck in Overdrive 200 1990

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. After driving the car this morning, I think the problem is that the car won't shift above (what sounds like) 3rd gear. At 60mph, the engine is really revving high. Any ideas? Or do you still think it's the overdrive relay?

          Thanks,

          Matt

"...do you still think it's the overdrive relay?"

I think you shouldn't anguish over the question. Instead, resolder your existing relay and decide from there what needs doing next.

Removing 'n replacing the relay is something you literally do sitting around.

Re: Stuck in Overdrive 200 1990

        Matt --

The OD relay is under the dash, in through the glovebox hole and to the left, toward center dash. It's about 6" toward the center and 3" behind the dash, directly under the center-right vent. Usually it's clipped to a metal strut and buried under a buncha wiring harnesses.

        Remove and discard the clip.

Remove the plastic cover and examine the backside of the printed circuit board under a bright light and using a magnifying glass. Often you'll see tiny circular cracks around several connections.

Resolder using a solder gun (150-200 Watts, or so) on the heavy connections, and a small iron (25 Watts, or so) on the smaller connections. Be careful to avoid bridging solder across adjacent traces. Use electronics solder NOT plumbing solder.

Th first picture shows the location of the OD relay (this pix of an '82 with manual tranny, but the location's the same).

The small picture below show an OD relay before resoldering, and the cracks are visible. The larger pix shows the same relay after resoldering, and also after I patched a small torn trace.

"...is the present condition dangerous for me to drive in?"

Not for ordinary driving around town. It's much like the pre-'83 automatics, most of which didn't have OD. I wouldn't drive coast to coast, and I suspect it's tough on the nerves.

          Don:

Thanks for the info and photos. Since it looks like I can unplug that piece to work on it, is the car safe to drive without the piece plugged in (while I work on soldering it)?

          Cordially,

          Matt

"...safe to drive without the piece plugged in..."

Yep. It'll drive just the same as it now drives. ODless.
