Very weird engine stall. 200 89

Last night the car died on a highway. Most peculiar thing about the stalling was the car was running fine for about 35 min (on the highway), and when I slowed down for traffic ahead, the car was stalling all of sudden. Made few rescue attempts by restarting the engine with the auto-trans in neutral. However the effort did not go that far - the car would not respond to the accelation pedal. Felt something similar to when engine is out of timing. And finally stalled altogether.

I tried to start by unpluging/plugging the AMM connector: there was slight difference with the connector unplugged - car idled for about 5-10 sec. - but result same (the enginge would stall).

Finally the car was towed to a garage I know (no, the guy is not a Volvo specialist). From my conversation with him I guess he did not do much except raising the idle which he shouldn't have done, and checked the fuel pump pressure which he said fine. And he said the car is running again.

A few minutes after I picked-up the car, I struggled again with the stalling engine. But this time, after few minute of struggle, the car was running fine again. At least it seemed that way.

Obiously the car can not fix itself. The member of this message group helped me a number of occations before, can you help me with this problem?

Thank you all in advance.

Would the engine seem to run ok if you kept the rpm's up? Then when you

come to a stop sign, stall right out? Can you keep it running by turning

the idle way up to keep it from stalling?

If you answer yes to those questions, I'd look at the ignition system. i had

a car that was VERY hard to start.....got it started sometimes with

    (Many Many) REALLY short

bursts of cranking (unhh unhh............unhh unhh............unhh unhh............unhh unhh............)

then would have to keep it going by keeping the revs up. Finally got

so I couldn't even start it with the convoluted burst method.

Turned out a change of rotor, dist. cap, and wires (of all things!) fixxed the

    problem.

check the fuel filter. I had a similar problem with my 1980 volvo 244.

Re: Very weird engine stall. 200 89

Thanks, Tom. I replaced fuel filter and lowered the idling speed.

Now the car seemed run fine when cold, but when it has been driven for a while - about 20 min. - the car would idle very roughly, then eventually stalls. As long as I have my foot on the pedal I can keep it alive, and drive.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I replace alternator few day ago. Could I have done any harm to the electrical system?

      Please help.
