what's the relay click you hear at idle? 200 84

Hi everyone! My 83 and 84's have LH2.0 and when waiting at a stop light I often hear a

relay clicking away; sounds like it is coming from just above the radio and heater controls.

It seems to effect the idle. I am particularly concerned because I am converting a diesel

wagon to this vintage B23F, and when I put everything in there I did not run across any

relay in this location. It does not sound as if it is coming from the system or fuel pump relay,

though it's possible, but I have no idea why either of those would be changing state when the

engine is idling comfortably. The engine I installed does work. It's hard to start cold, though.

(I'm thinking the hard start unrelated to my question).

So, LH folks, what's that click?

Re: what's the relay click you hear at idle? 200 84

I'm looking at my manual and the relays that are in that location are

headlight relay, door lock relay, trans overdrive relay power window relay (these are even with the center air vents and just above the AC knob is the rear window defrost relay that pulls some power, that might be dragging down your alternator/idle speed. The AC relay is below the AC switch, again if that kicking in the compressor, your idle will change.

Hope this helps.

Re: what's the relay click you hear at idle? AC relay in non AC car? 200 84

This car does not have AC. (I suppose it could still have an AC relay, though.)

None of the other accessory relays are candidates either, since I these should

kick in when you hit a switch, and i don't use my over drive.

You're AC suggestion has me intrigued....could an AC relay be installed

on cars without AC?

I don't think you'd have an AC relay w/out the AC system. There shouldn't be any relays in that location related to LH - just the accessory relays that Tony mentioned.

Are you sure there isn't any vibrating wire bundle, plastic panel, or even the heater fan making the noise?

Hard cold start can be a number of things, but a prime suspect is the check valve screwed onto the end of the main fuel pump...
