no lights 200 1986

i recently bought a 240dl 1986 that had a lot of work done on it but still had a few problems. i have cured all of the problems except one. the parking lights come on but all of the lights go out when i turn on the full lights. the headlights will come on if i hold back on the dimmer switch. i have replaced the step relay and the light switch. also does this model have a bulb failure sensor and light? i can remove a tail light and the bulb failure light still doesn't come on. anyone?

    Re: no lights 200 1986

Yes bill, as I look in my trusty Bentley book I see that '86 does have a bulb sensor relay.

My sensor went bad just last month for the Brake lights only. I traced the wires from the brake pedal to the senosor and the brake lights to the sensor, I pulled the sensor off, and soldered wiers directly to the pins on the sensor (basically jumping out the sensor without cutting up any harnesses). That worked for me.

maybe the whole sensor cashed in it's chips. Or if the car was played with, It's missing.

On my '89, it's just above your left knee if you are sitting in the car. unclip the carpeting above your knee and stick your hand up agains the dashboard. In the '89 is a red round can 1.5" diameter x 2.5" long that has a spring clip holding it to the dash.
