Road Rally's 200 89

Okay, so this isn't a REAL post regarding a 240, but since I own one, my wife has a 960 and blah blah blah, and since this is probably the most read section on the Board, here's my inquiry.

We've all seen the commercials on TV for the Lexus and VW where the guys race their cars in mud and through the woods in what appears to be back woods road rallies, etc. My question is, do these races really exist and if so, for crying out loud WHERE!? Criminy. I'd love to drag the wife and kids off to see one! Or are these commercials simply a figment of Madison Avenue? Oh,and by the way, I live in Upstate New York, so I'm probably having to travel to see these right??

Mucho gracias.

Re: Road Rally's 200 80

Tim..

The commercials for the VW and Lexus are from Pro Rally events. As far as getting up close and personal to one, there are actually a few in the Northeast, in upstate NY, PA and Maine. Check SCCA.ORG for ProRally events & dates...

my father and I are entering our 3rd year of ProRally events, running a 1980 242 GT, prep'd for Group 2. (Car # 156). you can e-mail me if you have and ?'s or if you want to get more involved than spectating, we're always looking for someone to help out w/ being our crew... (donpaulsen@att.net)

Still a ways from you, but perhaps closer to home is the Annual Maine Forest rally, I believe they also have one in the winter. And every summer there's the race up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire which features some pretty interesting cars.

Re: Road Rally's 200 89

tim-

i live in the south (atlanta area to be exact.) i find that on any given summer weekend, i can find a bubba (road) rally at any field that has a few mud holes and lots of things to destroy. yep, you'll need to travel but, at least airtran can get you here quick; you can even enjoy the barbeque they've prepared for you in the cockpit. anyway, come on down, drag out the 4x4, fill the cooler with black label and start slingin mud. the best part of this when the 'rally' is over. all these guys hit the road and bring the rally to the road with mud goin' everywhere. so, this summer, if you haven't found a rally in rolling mag., let me know and i'll meet you at the airport with my 4x4 and a cooler full.

Well done. King of Links, eh? Maybe I should put that in my sig line :)

As for the rally racing, check out the latest IPD Newsletter (can be downloaded from www.ipdusa.com in .pdf format, Vol. 13, Number 6), in addition to the links already provided. Particularly, there's an article by Jerrad Isch titled "A Long Day at the Wild West ProRally" that tells about his day as a volunteer/spectator at a ProRally event in Washington. It definitely sounds like something worth seeing in person. Below is a picture of the Volvo 740T that was in the race mentioned above.

Here's my page of Volvo 240 Links. I started putting together a page of links because my netscape bookmarks kept getting wiped out, but I haven't had a chance to add to the page in a while so there aren't that many...yet.
