inner tie rod install is impossible. Aghh! 700 85

I have a 1985 740 and most of you know I have been posting a lot of questions about getting my car ready for an alignment. well I just got my inner tie rods and I went to remove the old ones. But there is no place to get a wrench on the ball side of it where it attaches to the rack. What do I do? Sorry I have to ask all these rookie questions but this one boggles me.

Thanks

Ryan

I was confused when I did mine, but you can do the following. Hood the rack with vise grips braced up against the frame so that the rack does not have much rotating force on it. Then tighten the tie rod with a pipe wrench or another vise grip or some other plumbing tool. Crude, but effective.

I personally used the Rene method and the instalation went very easy. The key is the vice grips keeping the rack from moving. Good Luck.

I'm looking at a Volvo service manual and it shows an adjustable wrench holding the rack shaft and a slip joint pliers on the ball part. It says not to let the rack rotate or you risk damaging the pinion. The manual is for the CAM steering gear. The other kind is ZF. There should be a label on the car with codes for different equipment. CAM=2 ZF=3(according to Haynes) I hope someone who has actually taken one apart can help you with this.

The adjustable wrench part is the important bit. Set it tight on the teeth of the rack and use it to hold against whatever plier or pipewrench you can put on the ball socket.
