SRS/Airbag q. 200 1990

This '90 244 I'm driving these days is the first airbag-equipped brick I've driven.

In the center console, amongst the switches, is a flat panel that says 'SRS'. I popped it out, and there is one wire (orange, I believe) running to it. What does this do? In fact, what can one accomplish with one wire (and no ground)?

Grounding that wire briefly pulls the codes out from the SRS light on the dashboard.
