turns over - no spark 120-130 67

67 122S. I have an electrical problem. The car started and began to warm up. After a minute or so, the car died. Cranked again - no start. Gas not a problem. No spark at the points. Power to the ignition switch, and not from the primary lead off the coil. Seems like it could be the ignition switch, or the wire in the shielded cable. What would cause this failure? Is there any way to removethis and repair switch/coil without destroying the shielded cable? Anyone out there got a good used cheap switch coil? It's too cold here to mess with this for much longer. What is to be done?

    Danny;

    Divide and conquer...you need to determine if the problem is caused by the distributor (which supplies the open or closed connection to ground to the coil primary), or the coil itself (these are very reliable but occasionally do fail internally), or the cap which then routes the high voltage to the appropriate plug(unless dirt or the resulting carbon tracks allow it to discharge to somewhere else, typically the grounded metal of the distributor housing). I suppose the ignition switch could also fail internally but as it is part of the coil you would need to dissassemble to repair anyway. If your coil turns out to be the problem, you could use a coil(without ign. switch and armoured cable) from a 140 (no ballast resistor required), as a replacement until it gets warmer or you can locate a used coil/cable/ign switch assy) from a 122.

    Regards,

    If your points (or capacitor)are closed or shorted it would

    do what you describe. Disconnect the wire from your coil to

    the distributor and see if you get voltage there with the

    switch turned on. If so, first make sure that your points are

    breaking (the screw that holds them can loosen up) and then that

    there are no shorts. This can be tricky- there are fiber washers

    and other insulating devices that get the screw through the

    distributor case that can give out. Any short here will kill you

    graveyard dead!

      turns over - no spark 120-130 67

      George and Ron

      I had previously done the fault chasing in the distributor. The throughbolt is isolated from the dist. body. I had also replaced the condenser. But I think that the problem precedes the distributor

      I disconnected the primary from the coil to the distributor, and then with the key on, got juice to both sides of the ignition switch - in from the starter/battery, and out to the fuse box, and presumably into the shielded cable to the coil, but still no juice at the primary from the coil. So I'm figuring it's either the coil, or the switch (likely/unlikely??) Seems that in any case I need another switch/coil to swap to at least verify. Just pushed it across the street into a parking place good til thursday night. Loaners anyone?

        Danny;

        I dont know how (with voltmeter or testlamp) you made the measurement which found "no juice" at the primary, plus you didn't mention the state of the points (open or closed), so there's not enough info for me to comment on.

        The fastest way to check your coil for output is to disconnect wire from points(ignition on, coil output wire laid (with a sparkgap) on ground), touch coil(points) wire to ground and release...you should get a spark at the sparkgap everytime you BREAK the connection.

        Keep Looking, the answer is near.

          Re: turns over - no spark 120-130 67

          The test I did was with the wire to the points disconnected. I tested with a volvmeter and got 12v to the switch from the battery, and then the same out of the switch From the unshielded output with the key on. With the key on, however I got no voltage from the primary lead off the engine compartment end of the coil. I'll try your test

          thanks

          Danny
