muffler now in trunk 200 90

Hi all,

I was backing out of the driveway this morning when the read muffler fell off. It was well rusted. For fun, I went over to Midas for an estimate and a closer looksee. They wanted to replace everything from the cat. back for $200. Just the rear muffler, they quoted, including labor, $100. IPD has the complete muffler for $149.

Does anyone know what the Volvo, gulp, dealer would charge me? I can get by with only the rear muffler changed but I wonder if it's not a better idea to do the whole shebang.

Ideas?

Paul

Go to the dealer and get the kit. I bought one for my 744Ti and have had to replace it a few times, all at minimal cost. Lifetime warrantee did the trick, my car does have 255K miles on it so I got my money's worth.

Re: muffler now in trunk 200 90

In my experience, when part of a muffler system is rusted out, the rest is not far behind. It's probably best to replace it all from the cat back. I just bought an '84 240 which has a Midas system on it which is only a few years old. The tailpipe is rusted out already. Even if they guarantee the mufflers, you can still pay quite a bit for the repairs to the connecting pipes. The Midas system is also noisy inside the car. Several years ago I bought an '83 240 and put on a complete Volvo exhaust system myself. It cost just under $200 US in those days. I put 100,000 miles on that system with no rust-out and it is still going strong. Something came loose inside the rear muffler after several years and began to rattle. The Volvo dealer gave me a new muffler with no questions asked because of the lifetime warranty. A good deal! This isn't a bad do-it yourself project except for the pain of getting the old sustem off and dealing with the crud which falls on your face. Wear eye protection!

About $200 for the rear muffler and pipe. (I know this because my family seems to back their exhaust systems over and into things pretty often).

I put on IPD's sport exhaust system, but the fit is absolute SHIT on my car. If I wasn't 2000 miles from them, I'd love to show them how the design is badly flawed. It has never been right to this day, and that was $200 anyway. I'm totally dissatisfied with it... could've hit Midas myself for a couple of hundred bucks and been better off. The standard IPD exhaust might (I hope) fit better than this does.

You could always do what i did and adapt a ford tarus muffler from a wagon for about 10 dollars and a few hrs of your time if you have access to welding equipment etc.Got the muffler from a junck yard for 10 dollars canadian, the mufflet is all stainless.

    Paul --

The genuine Volvo exhaust kit (two mufflers, two pipes, clamps, hangers, hardware) costs a bit more than Midas, but is much better. Volvo mufflers have a lifetime warranty to the purchaser.

If you're interested in "do-it-yurself," then look on eBay. At least two folks are selling exhaust kits, which MUST be many time better than Midas, and the two now up for auction are starting under $110.

I've bought various Volvo parts from seller "uconn72" and been very happy with the transaction. They're listed in the Brickboard retailers, and may sell you the system for their starting price (as they did for me):

Foreign Car Parts Of Groton, INC

    734 Poquonnock Road

    Groton, CT 06340 USA

    1-860-445-0063

If you can separate the old system behind the cat, this is a true "do-it-yurself" job.

Re: muffler now in trunk 200 90

I had to replace my exhaust when it sounded like a motorcycle when i reved up my car on day. The "first" muffler was rusted out and the rear one was going to be next. So after a weeks driving I replaced the exhaust system with the IPD performance cat-back system. I think I may have paid like 190 for it to come to my door. I spent hours getting the old one off because the other system had meen "midasized" at one point and they had welded on the muffler. So once i got the old system off the new one was very easy to put on. The 2 1/4 inch pipe made a big difference in the sound as well as the flow and reving of the engine.

So I would recomend the "do it yourself aproach"

    Good Luck

    Adam

p.s. on my website there is a pic of the ipd system
