Valve Noise on GLE 900 1991

Hello,

I need some opinion at that point, i got a Volvo 940 Gle (16 valves)

and the valve make loud noise (clack...) from time to time.

the car has 148,000 kilometer on it and he his very clean.

I want to now if its worth the trouble to fix it (i think 16 valves

have a bad reputation), if i decide to let a dealer fix-it how much

i can expect to pay for this kind of job..

Thanks in advance.

Richard Auger

Re: Valve Noise on GLE 900 1991

Hydraulic valve lifter noise is something that many of us 16-valve owners put up with from time to time. Try not to exceed 2500 rpm when they are clacking. Synthetic oil seems to help. I used Mobil 1 10W30 with added CD-2 oil detergent to help remove deposits, changed every 5K mi and Volvo or Mann oil filters. This helped quiet down a motor that was noisy when I got it. Mobil 1 worked better for me than dino oils or Castrol Syntec. I would not call in a mechanic on this yet. 16-valve motors are somewhat temperamental sometimes but I do love the way they rev.

Re: Valve Noise on GLE 900 1991

i have a 93 940 was burning oil on 1 plug,,I followed a great local mechanics advise & put 16 oz on kerosene in the oil,ran slowly 30 mph max for 30 mins,,came home drained the oil & changed the filter ,let indrip out overnight,,[pulled the dist wire to be careful] installed new copper seal on coil drain plug,,filled it w Napa synthetic & its run greaat ever since..no more burned plug..
