Cone Bushings = Alignment 700 1986

A few weekends ago I replaced the cone bushings in the lower control arm of my 740 Turbo. The bushings are supposed to have a large washer on each side of them, four in all. What I found was only onw washer on one side and three on another. So I made the necessary corrections and put it back together. It seemed to drive much better except that a cyclical front end vibration got worse as time went on. So last night I took it in for an alignment and the guy reset the toe-in on his super duper new wizbang alignment machine, complete with PC running winzode and a really large TV monitor. The tech was quite knowlegable about the car and his new machine even has photos of the front end stored for reference, as well as most other cars as well. I also had them rotate the tires, front to back. I know, I should have done it myself, but it was there and it was only 10bux, so WFT.

The car drives so much better except now the cyclical vibration is on the rear. I guess I'll just have to drive it really hard around the turns to wear the rear tires round again.

He also said the camber is a little off. I have all the before and after measurements so I'll be asking some Volvo Masters what I should do next.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

If the vibration moved from the front to the rear, sounds like you have a wheel off-balance. Could be a warped wheel or even a broken belt in the tire. Might want to check those.

The front tires were cause of the problem due to the incorrect toe in. The steering wheel doesn't shake but I can feel the vibration in the rear.

camber can be adjusted 700 1986

I understand there's a tech bulletin out somewhere, maybe Steve Seekins knows about it. He mentioned such a bulletin on his Cherry Turbo strut and bottom brace review.

Anyway, Scandinavian Import Service in Rockville MD was able to adjust camber on my 87 760T. They slotted the tower as I recall and redrilled the mounting hole for the strut. Camber spot on. I wish it had a little more negative camber but what the heck...205/55VR-15 Dunlop SP8000 tires wear evenly across the tread so I don't see a problem.

Re: camber can be adjusted 700 1986

Camber adjustment is described in the Volvo OEM Front Suspension manual: you do just as John describes, moving the top of the strut to the correct position and then securing it by reslotting and bolting the strut bearing plate. Easier if you have a special tool to hold the strut top. Caster is adjusted with longer or shorter control rods.

Sears won't do this: you have to take it to a good alignment shop that knows this car.

I guess swapping wheels is a good way of identifying vibrations. Mine also went on one of those machines and my camber was close but not perfect and they said they can't adjust it. I don't see why not because the holes in the strut towers are oval. They said it was close enough-but they re-use old gaskets.

I don't have any oval holes. If I want them, I need to get out a file and make them oval. One complaint I have about these cars is the lack of eccentric bolts in the front suspension for precise adjustments. These cars are not MB's and it shows.
