New tach is questionable 200 84

Just installed a new (old) tach in place of the large clock in the instrument pod.

Ran a 14ga. wire from the (#1) terminal on the coil to the tach, and installed the harness from the new small clock I also installed.

The tach seems to read quite low - my idle is about 1300 rpm (another story), and the tach reads just above 0. At crusing speed (auto tranny), the tach reads about 1600 rpm.

Noticed today that the tach needle was bouncing around from 0 to 2000 rpm for a short time, while driving - no other simptoms raised thier head.

Is there an adjustment for the tach? What other problems may there be?

Are there 6 cylinder large tachs? I have never seen one. The tach needle is freely adjustable on its shaft, unlike a speedo needle say. Set it to bottom at zero when off, or in your hand. With a little trial and error you can match it to a test tach reading or with a believable idle of 850 rpms or so. You can't read it that accurately (+/- 50 rpms) anyway. The flutter may be another problem but the hookup should use the red/white in the dash of any 84.

      Re: 6-zyl big tach 200 84

Yup, Bob, there sure are 6 cylinder large tachs.

For sure in the 262C/Bertone, which was built into '81. And although I've never personally seen one, I have to assume the 264/5 GLE of '81-'82 would have had a tach, too.

Is this the large tach installed in place of the large clock? I thought all dashes from 1982 on where prewired for this tach. Was there a spare white with red stripe wire behind the dash? This should have been the tach lead. If you want I have tach installation instructions that I can email to you. You might try switching the coil terminal connection to the other side of the coil. If all other gauges are okay probably the tach is bad. Also make sure it was a 4 cyl tach. A 6 cyl will read 2/3 of true rpm.

The paper label should read 4 zyl for 4 cylinder. (The 4 tkl just means four cycle engine.)

    Bill D.

ps I have a 4 cylinder large tach for sale on ebay right know.

Does it say 6zyl on the back of the new tach? That will read 33% low on a 4cylinder. Other than that you probably got a bad unit.
