Water on the floor 200 82

My '82 240 is leaking a lot water onto the floor on the passenger side when it rains. I have the molded plastic floormats from IPD with the 1.5" lip around the edges so I get a nice pool going overnight. I can see that the water is dripping off the lowest point of the wiper linkage up under the dash on the passenger side. I know for sure that the water isn't getting into the car at the wiper gearbox because I've slathered that area entirely with butyl rubber. That area doesn't really seem to get wet when it's raining either. I've check the mindshield seal, and the antenna mounts. I'm about 90% sure the water isn't coming in there either. Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this? It is very annoying since I live in the Northwest where it rains from November to April.

Thanks,

Ben

I'd check the drain hoses that lead from the fresh air intake. I believe they run againt the fire wall, and drain under the car, if these get stopped up you could have some problems.

Are there drain hoses on both sides, or just the driver's side? I seem to recall seeing a tube that looked like a drain somewhere near the fuse panel. I'm not sure that is the problem anyway. I sealed off the fresh air intake (between the wipers?) with duct tape one rainy day and it still leaked. At this point I suspect a bad winshield install. My next step is to investigate that further. This has been an annoying problem that seemed to start when I last had a new windshield put in about 1.5-2 years ago. It's really frustrating because the car doesn't realy have any serious problems considering the 286k on the odo. Anyway, I really need to get it fixed for obvious reasons. If you happen to think any other ideas I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks again,

      Ben

Ben -- since you don't have a roofrack with a 244, I'd suspect it's your windshield. The outside "seal" isn't a seal at all, it's just a trim strip. After time, windshields seem to settle a bit and gaps open up; I've had this happen with both my '81 and '83. I've had to remount the windshield again, at which point on the '81 I decided to go with new glass and have it professionally done -- quite a difference having non-frosted glass. What you really need to do is crawl up under your dashboard with a flashlight during a heavy downpour, or have someone dowse you with a hose, so you can really see from where the drops are issuing. By the way, don't trust the IPD floor mat tubs to catch all the water. I've got them too, and when my mats have had water in them, I can count on some having seeped in down the side trim panels and under the carpet. You've *got* to get this dried up or your floorpans will start to rust. Volvo carpets make great sponges...

Re: Water on the floor 200 82

I realize the outer piece of the windshield is just a piece of trim. Actually, I had the windshield replaced about 1.5-2 years ago. At that point I noticed it leaking so badly, I could find wet spots on the top of the dash, not just underneath. They came out and "fixed" it by caulking the hell out of a couple spots. I suspect the original install wasn't done very well and is causing the current problem. If I look under the dash, I can see it dripping from the wiper linkage. I can't trace it any farther after that becuase it disappears up inside the body. I believe the install was lifetime guaranteed. At this point, I think I'll get them to come back and start from scratch. I know it's no leaking from the fresh air vent because I sealed that up with duct tape one day and waited for rain. It still leaked. Thanks again. If you think of anything else I would appreciate it.

      Ben
