thanks all! It was the fuel pump! 200 85

I WAS the fuel pump. Relay is all right. Ordering a new one Monday. Tapped it and it started running again, but I don't trust it. I guess I will have to carry a piece of wood in the car to smack it if it cuts out while I am driving it, just like I did for my '75 wagon.

Sometimes these cars are like a relationship. Sometimes it is easier to live with their quirks than change your ride. (Either 4 wheeled, or two legged.)

Before you order a new fuel pump you might want to check the connections at the pump. You said you tapped it and it started running.

I've replaced fuel pumps on my old 75 and on my 80 and have always ended up redoing the wiring at the pump connection..the insulation had been rubbed off or the positive connector was corroded. This stuff is all hanging underneath the car and in the winter it gets a good salt bath, and since yours sat all summer it has had plently of time to corrode.

The pump may be ok?

Did you check the in-tank fuel pump. If it's out it could shorten the life of the new main pump. The good news is they are much less expensive than the main pump.

Apparently a FORD pre-pump can be used in place of the Volvo one.

I believe the Ford replacement was only for the REGINA equipped cars, '90 or later, that have the main pump in the tank (no undercar pump at all).

When my fuel pump was ready to go,it let me know by making a buzzing sound. This went on for about 2 weeks. Don't ignore it,I paid the price of it quitting while driving home late one night. Not too many people are going to stop and help.Costly tow fee,too!('86 245).
