throttle control 700 1986

My '86 740 gle has an intermittant problem. Sometimes the engine slows down when I step on the gas. The engine returns to normal idle speed when I lift off the pedal. Sometimes the engine slows down as if there is no gas while driving on the freeway. The problem seems to correct itself after about ten minutes sitting on the side of the road. There are several new electrical components, fuel pump relay and fuel system ECM. I am at a loss, HELP!

    Re: throttle control 700 1986

Have the fuel filter changed (it's under the car directly below the driver's seat) and see if the problems disappears. If the problem occurs only when the tank level is below half, the problem is most likely related to the in-tank feed pump or the hose connecting it to the outlet - both common failures, but not applicable if your problem happens with a near full tank.

If neither of these fixes it, loosen the fuel filler cap and retry. A clogged vent will cause the symptom you describe by not allowing the entrance of air to replace the fuel used. I do not know whether the tank is vented at the filler cap, per se, or if there's another vent system on your car. I'm sure another reader will be able to answer that in the event it turns out to be the cause of your problem.

Sounds like you are not getting enough gas to keep up with the demand for highway speed. When did you last change your fuel filter? Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Does this only happen when the gas tank is less than 1/2 full. There is a short lenght of hose in the fuel tank connecting the in-tank pump to the output tube. If this or the in-tank pump fail, you do not get the proper amount of fuel to the main pump. Left too long and you will need to replace main pump.
