No Start 200 1982

Today I started my car and drove about 2 blocks were it promptly died. I think I may have run it out of gas since it was very low. I went and got 2 gallons and put it in. I got it started enough to get it home but now it wont start at all, sounds like it is not getting gas. I can here the fuel pumps spool up and I can here the frequency valve up front. I replaced the fuel pumps about 1 - 1 1/2 years ago. Any suggestions on where I should start diagnosing this problem?

firest of all take a fuel pressure guage and test to see if you are getting the proper fuel to the engine if not i would replace the fuel filter and retest the fuel pressure to make sure that the pump is actually still working

I went and did an initial test of the car. I do not have a pressure guage but I took the hose off at the filter and cranked the car. There was plenty of gas flowing. I half filled my coffee can in about 3 seconds so it is flowing. I looked at the cap and rotor. It was intact but looking a bit worn with some corrosion. I am getting spark at all four plugs but it looks alittle weak. The plug wires are alittle old also so I plan on doing a tune up (fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs and wires). One interesting thing is when it died the temp guage went through the roof. It was reading fine up until it died then bamb to the top. What could have caused that? Even now while im cranking it to test for spark and fuel the guage is going up and I know the car isnt even warm. This is a new one for me.

I'm going through this with one of my '82s (K-jet). I measured the control pressure at the CPR and found it pegged the test gauge.

The fuel return line is free. Conclusion? The fuel pressure regulator, which is integral with the distributor, is plugged. (So says one of the Volvo green manuals.)

High control pressure forces the distributor to lean out the mixture.

Crack open the return line and check for flow when you crank. Also confirm that it's free 'n clear when you blow back to the tank. (REMOVE the gas cap, or it'll blow gas back at you! How do I know this?)

          Re: No Start 200 1982

I went out to the car today to try and start it and it fired up and ran for awhile then promptly died. I really dont know what to check. I had been real rainy and wet the last few days so that may have contributed to my problem. I am going to replace all ignition parts (cap rotor ect...) and give it a wirl. Any other suggestions?

This sounds different than my fuel injection problem. To start (little pun there...), I'd chase ignition.

When you have a chance, try the "midnight test." But not in the rain.
